The Roman Catholic Church established a mission in Hong Kong in 1841. It was classified as a patriarchal parish in 1874, and it was designated a parish in 1946. There are about 384,000 Catholics in Hong Kong. The priesthood serving Catholics includes 296 priests, 68 monks, and 474 nuns. There are 51 parishes in Hong Kong, including 40 churches, 31 chapels and 26 auditoriums. The mass sacrifices are conducted in Cantonese, but three-fifths of the parishes also use English and sometimes Filipino. The diocese of Hong Kong has its own administrative organization and maintains close ties with the Pope and parishes around the world. The diocese of Hong Kong, like other Catholic communities around the world, uses the same Bible, doctrines, worship rituals and structures.
