adoption-single parent??
Posted by stella1 (244 days ago)
I'm single, in my mid thirties , financially secure, and would make a great mother!
Just wondering if anyone can offer advice on adopting a child as a single parent. Which countries are most likely to seriously accept my application, and not just put me on a never ending waiting list??

The best place to adopt as a single parent is in Hong Kong. I adopted a 6 month old baby girl as a single parent when I was 48 years old and I have just been approved to adopt a second child, again as a single parent. You just need to contact the Adoption Unit of the Welfare Department in Hong Kong. The process is exactly the same as explained in other threads on the topic of adopting in Hong Kong. The entire process from attending my first meeting to having my daughter come home took less than a year. Good luck.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my query. Wow less than a year. That sounds promising!
I had heard that for single parents in HK it takes a lot longer, and often only successful if you are willing to take on Special needs children. If you dont mind me asking, how much does it cost for the initial stages?

There is no cost at all apart from around $3000HK for the official paperwork and court hearing. Special needs in Hong Kong is often not the same as what is considered special needs in some western countries. Don't be put off by the use of that term.

How recently did you adopt. In the last couple of years? I heard that in the last couple of years, there were no babies available to single parents.

My daughter came home on the 11/8/06 when she was 6 months old. My approval to adopt a second time was approved in March of this year. I am in the matching pool and just have to wait. I have heard it is taking a lot longer to be matched to a child because of the increase in people choosing to adopt.

Hi Stella1,
Just wondering how you are getting on with your adoption attempts here in HK. I thought that HK did not allow single parent adoption so this news is great as I am also a single parent considering adopting a child.

I adopted my daughter in Hong Kong over ten years ago, I am single and was in my mid forties at the time. It was relatively simple, some paperwork, interviews, home inspections etc. I was grilled quite a bit about being single, some silly comments ie: how will my child learn to relate to men if there is not a man around?!! They do prefer for Chinese babies to go to Chinese families, but there are numerous other children born in HK: Filipina, Nepalese, Indonesian all who need homes. My daughter is mixed Filipina. Go for it, it will be the best decision in your life!

I am also on the matching list and waited three years before being offered a baby with potential mental problems. It does take a long time for single parents to get a child these days.
