Adoption again.
Posted by Woody (1957 days ago)
I am still seaching for as much info as I can about adopting a girl about 3-4 years old. If anybody can add any information I would be very grateful.
I have been to the relative website for adopting in Hong Kong. I am living in Hong Kong for the forseeable future. If I was able to adopt in Hong Kong do I have to approach the Australian Government first. From my web searches I don't think I do because I have been living in Hong Kong for longer than 12 months. Can anyone confirm this? I understand that only if and when I return to Australia I need to apply for an adoption visa for the child.
Also, does anyone know about any other agencies dealing with children looking for adoption. Is there one on South Lantau?
If anyone could provide further guidelines it would be most helpful to us.
Thank you.

Hi, we are just in the adoption procedure with the Social Welfare Department (Adoption Unit) in HK. You should call them and ask for the next seminar they are doing every few weeks.
I spoke to our embassy before starting the process and it will not be a problem to get the right passport afterwards.
If you would like to speak to me, just let me know your email address.
Good luck!

Even if you want to adopt from Mothers Choice you have to go thru the Social Welfare Department first!

Dear sassy2,
Thanks very much for your efforts! I would agree with you that as we have been here well over 12 months and are not leaving soon (I hope) it should not be an issue.

Woody, I adopted children while living overseas 13 and 14 years ago. At that time the West Australian government required that I have the adoptions validated in the court in WA. The requirements vary from state to state. You could ask a friend/relative to enquire in your home state. My sister made enquiries on my behalf and the responses were very helpful. I could not apply for Aussie passports until my children's adoptions were validated and citizenship was granted (a mere formality after the validation). It took time to achieve all of this -- about a year, I think. I took the children to Australia for a holiday using their original passports, saw a lawyer about the validation and left all the paperwork with her when we returned from our holiday -- we needed a few more documents which were easy to send to Australia and few weeks/months later, it was done. We then went to the Aussie embassy to apply for citizenship and passports. It was a lot of paperwork, but not expensive. Just give yourself plenty of time and try to get a HK passport for your new daughter immediately so that you have the flexibility to travel if you want/need to.

I have found some info from the NSW government that may help
you. I have spoken to them also and you are able to adopt here
and return home legally if you have lived here for over 12 months.
Here is their website www.community.nsw.gov.au/adoptions
