IMP Qs on Adoption from India

Hello! We're looking to adopt from India..but seem to have no clue about private adoptions there. Also have not had any luck with the Home Study Report- i.e not able to locate an agency in Hk that would do it for us....Has anyone got any information related to this?
Would appreciate any feedback from people who have adopted successfully or are in the process of from India.....

Hi HKger, we have just submitted our papers for adoption and it seems to me that we are in for a long drawn battle with lots of paperwork. Can you tell me what your experiences have been with adoption from India? We aim to adopt from there as well. Thanks

hi...best of luck! we had much trouble with the agency in hk...in the end we just went down to india n did it there itself(only good if u know how to work your way around with contacts or good friends for support). However our case was a bit different..it was an inter-family adoption.

A couple of Belgian friends of mine tried to adopt from India but were told that only Hindus were allowed to adopt. Others religions (and presumably if they were other nationalities too and not Hindu??) were only allowed to foster.

Anyone else have this experience?

No idea about India, but Caritas will do a home study for you, friend of friend used them when adopting from Cambodia

Hi, Hkger, thanks for suggesting the alternate way to adopt by doing it directly from India. I have enquired about this apparently, this is not possible for us with or without the help from friends locally.
Firsttimemom, thanks for offering another perspective by citing your friends' experiences. We have been told that we will have to bring the child here as guardians and adopt it locally through court - quite a long-winded procedure, if either of the parent is a non-hindu. We will have to wait until the home study etc., though would like to know first hand experiences of how it is all done. I also found our point of liaison here in HK very bureaucratic. Ugh! Just makes the whole thing lot tougher.
