In 1988, Ben Johnson, bleeding steroids from his eyeballs, absolutely destroyed the supposedly clean competition running a 9.79 100 metres.

Fast forward two decades later and nary an eyebrow is raised when Usain Bolt crushes Johnson’s time with a 9.63 finish to win Gold in London (still well off of his world record of 9.58).

Marion Jones... multiple gold medal winner in Sydney:

"Throughout her entire athletic career—even in high school—Marion Jones had been accused, either outright or by implication, of taking performance enhancing drugs, a common allegation surrounding athletes involved in the sports under the "Track and Field" umbrella. Until 2007, Jones routinely denied—in almost every way possible and in almost any venue where the question arose—ever being involved with performance enhancers in any way, shape, or form. One of Jones's frequent statements in her own defense was that she had never tested positive for performance enhancing substances"

Only caught after the lab supplying her with designer steroids that did not show up in tests... was busted... and she was 'outted' along with a number of other athletes.

Sports that are one dimensional, relying almost solely on strength/speed/endurance entered into a new era about 2 decades ago. I will never watch another bike race, running race or swimming race and not think about PED's if someone does really well.
