Hi, I'd love to hear from people who have knowledge of small-scale, specialised electronics manufacturing in the mainland.
I work for a medium sized, well established british manufacturer of specialised electronics who still do virtually all their manufacturing in the UK. Its actually rather old-fashioned in that respect.
We're looking to find ways of cutting costs (who isnt ??), and so we're doing a feasibility study of relocating at least some of the manufacturing to mainland China. The reason why we havn't done any of this so far is because the nature of our product range involves fairly small production runs of a wide range of products, which involve a high degree of labour-intensive assembly and configuration. This rather falls outside the usual remit of typical mainland OEM contracts, so we're trying to think a bit outside the box. The fact is, no such suitable OEM really exists, as our products are either complex for the smaller OEMs and too specialised for the larger ones.
So we're thinking along the lines of a partially foreign-owned-enterprise (FOE) subsidary, or perhaps a domestically-owned mainland company working in close co-operation on a contract basis.
Does anyone have experience / advice / opinions on small-to-medium scale, specialised electronics manufacturing in Guandong / the Perl Delta / Shenzhen area ? At the moment this is essentially a Feasibility Study but if potential savings could be shown on paper then this is one of those things that I genuinely think could move quite quickly and financing would not be a problem.
Anyone got any opinions / advice / suggestions ??
