Word that NWS Holdings (0659) is in talks to sell Taifook Securities Group (0665) is again fueling speculation that mainland firms are keen to expand their brokerage coverage in Hong Kong.
China Construction Bank (0939) is seen as the likely winner, apparently offering HK$4 per share.
Taifook shares yesterday benefited from news of the potential buyout, surging to an intra-day high of HK$4.95 when the market opened.
It closed at HK$4.55, up 12.9 percent from the previous day.
"Almost all mainland banks have their eyes on the local brokerage business," said Andrew Wong Wai-hong, managing director of Tanrich Securities, though he noted that only BOCI, the brokerage arm of Bank of China (Hong Kong) (2388), has been successful to date.
"They would find it more useful to buy from existing local houses that already have an established client base."
Besides Taifook, there are other small brokerages on the market for sale. "Taiwan Securities is one of those who want to sell," according to one market participant, who said its parent wants to discontinue the business in the SAR which is pretty inactive.
NWS, which holds a 61.86 percent stake in Taifook, did not identify who it was in talks with.
A CCB spokesman denied there was anything "disclosable," saying the report was "purely speculative." Taifook was not immediately available for comment. KATHERINE NG
