How long does it normally take...

for a new helper to become effective around the house? Bear in mind she has been a helper before for 6 years. Our new helper (hired from the Phils directly) is visibly nervous despite our reassurances. What is a normal probation period before we start all over again?

Give her a least 3 months, honestly, she is probably trying very hard. Think about it if you were in her place and left eveything you knew behind to live AND work with your employer. I dare say you would have similar feelings. Look for tips like how well she is getting along with your kids, (making friends etc) is she trying to learn "your ways"? Is she getting enuogh to eat? sleep? Does she have small children back at home she is desperatly missing? Try to make a bit more positive connections and she if she can relax a bit. Of course, if she is really unreliable to the point of danger, then you should reconsider the 3 month window and let her go.
