Obligations when hiring a PT helper

Hi
Does anyone know what your obligations are when you hire a legal PT domestic helper?
Do you have to sign any contracts? buy insurance etc?

We didn't have a contract for our PT helper but just came to an agreement as to what days and hours she was to work. We bought insurance and made sure she signed a receipt after being paid.
