Need a Filipino perspective
Posted by isonoawabi (175 days ago)
My former helper has given birth to a baby in the Philippines. And she named her baby after mine! I can't believe she and her husband did that. I'm thrilled. My son is thrilled too. I want to give her baby a present. What is the best thing to give? She's Filipino. I don't want to give a present just as a former employer. I want to give something more special, something that shows that special bond that is there even though she no longer lives with and works for us. Any suggestions, especially from Filipino ladies? What is best from your cultural perspective?

i am a born and bred filipino. anything thats given with a true heart is special.
id say get her something that can help the baby long term like a start to a college fund or something similar. it doesnt have to be a really big amount. that would really be special.
we filipinos usually give useful, practical gifts.

I suggest you give her & her baby, something that is very HK. I mean, something that will be useful to her or to her baby, and at the same time, will also give reminisces of her stay in HK since you said she's now in Phils.
Hmmm, some sort of ONLY IN HK or FAMOUS IN HK set of toys or feeding bottles/wares or clothes for ages 2+. Hehe, I'm a filipina, though not a Mom, I think most moms here wanted to receive or to buy baby stuffs that can be use for 2-3+ years.

I agree with apennyforum an educational plan would be a perfect one not the very expensive one though, it also nice to give some baby stuffs that is very HK but prefer the educational thing as not also helping your former DH and that would really really remind her for the rest of her life that you were once a part of her life and will always will...i'm also a filipino and we always says thank you from the bottom of our hearts when recieved gifts and will never forget who gave it.

Thanks for all the kind input. Educational plan seems to be the favourite pick and I think I will settle for that. I tried the consulate for information. They don't seem to have a clue. May be I'll just remit some money through the bank with a note saying that it's for an educational fund and they should open a bank account or take out a one-off lump sum payment plan for the little one. Thanks.

you better call AIA and they will help you about the educational plan, you can buy for the kid. I think thats better than sending money to them, i am a filipino also, and I am telling you this to make sure that the money goes to the kid. Not a lot of kids have an account in Philippines, especially the little ones, its just not a thought for most to do it, we believe in a saying that education is the the key to success, even if you dont have savings as long as your kids finish college.
