Trying to find a DH
Posted by WWcC (157 days ago)
I am trying to find a domestic helper and want to know where can one advertise for work on HK island. I prefer not to use an agency and wondered if there were specific places people advertise. I know PnS but anywhere else. How could I find one through the church or are there other channels to find one. This website seems to only cater for agency. DB have got a website which is helpful but most DH want to stay in DB. Any advice is most welcomed.
Find what you are after in our Hong Kong A-Z Directory

It looks like you want to employ a DH which is already in HK so I guess your best bet is this site's agency, they don't charge that much and they say that they don't charge the DH at all. But if you really really really don't want to go through agency maybe try going to central area on sunday and just talk to 2-3 groups I am certain you phone line will be bombarded with calls for a long time ;)

Maybe if you explained why you don't want to use an agency we could help more.

axptguy, don't really see a need for her to explain why. We used this site that ed referred above. It is direct hire and not through an agency. It worked well for us.

ask your friends to ask their helpers - I find they always have someone who would like to move on from the existing contract

Thanks to those for constructive replies. Any other ideas are welcomed.
axptguy38: what difference would my explanation as to why I didnt want to use an agency help with ways to advertise for a DH - what part of 'don't want to' is difficult to understand??!! Some people are hilarious!!

WWcC - completely your choice, I agree - I did find it easier using the agency tho. I had very small twins on my hands and no time so it was really helpful to have someone sort all out for me...
My two cents worth..

Best way to find a helper quick is to ask your friends helpers to ask their friends and before you know it everyone is calling you. We just recently hired ours that way without agent fees, which was great. good luck.

Ed, is it true that the helper who advertise on your agency and chosen have to pay 6K to asiaxpat? I was jsut surprised becuase I found my helper before here in asiaxpat and both of us didnt pay anythingm of course my helper paid for the registration but then no agency fee as I recall. But then yesterday my helper told me that her friend went to asiaxpat and she want to find an employer through asiaxpat and the girl she talked to in your office said she will pay her 6K if she finds her an employer, does asiaxpat do this kind of business now? I was just so surprised because I never heard of it and I am an active member of a forum here.

WWcC, I know someone looking for an employer, she works in HongKong for a long time already. If you want to interview her you can PM me, I can recommend some helpers to you for interview.

Notes:
I just checked the Phillipine Consulate about direct hire and it states its new rules for direct hire. Has anyone done a direct hire recently and could advise me. The Consulate websiste says:
1. Name/ direct hire is only applicable to those helpers who have previous working experience in Hong Kong. For first timer, the application should be done through an accredited agency.
The helper I am considering has not worked in HK before but Sing and Taiwan. Does this mean I can't do a direct hire myself?
If anyone has done a direct hire and would not mind sending me their tel number so I could call and discuss a few things before I start to do the application, would be much appreciated.

all direct hire now have to be handled by an agency, because of the new policy in Philippines ....they have to undergo a week training and PDOS(pre-departure overseas seminar), everytime they finish this they will be issued a certificate to use to get the OEC (Overseas employment contract) that will be issued by the POEA.
Direct hiring fee is equivalent of the one month salary. I know a good agency that can help you, just let me know if you need info for it, I m just trying to help here, you can also go find agencies in central.
If you dont want to use agency then hire someone in Hongkong who is finish contract or terminated, becuase they dont need to use agency anymore even if they need to go home.
