How to help OFWs to be prepared for retirement

How can we help the OFWs, especially DH, to become prepared for their retirement?
Find what you are after in our Hong Kong A-Z Directory

As with most low paid workers they don't often have surplus income to think about such things it's hard enough to provide for the here and now especially those with kids and extended familly who are being supported by them. The only way it would happen is if helpers stayed long term with an employer and that employer recognised that they paid low wages so where happy to pay a set amount into a pension or savings fund each month to secure there workers future. I don't believe this will ever happen without it being mandatory though.

the trouble is most of us have not even got our own future secured, so I guess not many have thought about their helpers' one... Nice thought thought Jctom

Thank you for your reply, Moppet & ldsllvn. I think it seems it's about money matters, i think it shows that it's important to learn how to manage our money, budgeting, and savings. Planning and goal setting is also important.

As Moppet says this is a nice but unfortunately unrealistic thought. Low paid workers typically hardly have enough for today, let alone tomorrow.
One thought would be to set aside money beyond wages in a retirement plan of some sort.

Thank you axptguy38.

I sent my helper for a recent day seminar (www.enrichhk.org), tailored for helpers to manage money. I am told it was about on how to manage loans, manage day to day expenditure, saving to send money back home but a small part of it did focus on long term savings. She was quite happy with it, she was showing me the press coverage they got in one of the Filipino newspapers.

-sa That's great. How did she applied what she learned from the seminar? If she wants to learn more, I know a free seminar "Managing Your Money Wisely" which is to be held on May 25, 2008 2:00pm - 4:00pm at the Fortune Cook, 3/F, Southland Bldg. 47 Connaught Rd., Central, HK. She can call Chris 97181494 for reservation. Thank you for your reply -sa.

Thank you, GreenValleys for your reply. Do you have any idea on how we can help the OFWs, especially DH, to become prepared for their retirement?

-sa, thank you for your reply. I believe we can help OFWs, to be well prepared for retirement through education. Some common excuses for avoiding saving for retirement are: I'm too young; It's too late; I don't have enough money to put away; and there are other expenses.

Jctom,
You're welcome (but clearly it wasn't appreciated by all b/c it has been deleted - along with others that supported my view). In response to your question I will repeat what I said:
My husband often ran budgeting and general money-management sessions for the many FDHs at our church. Do I think they took it in? YES mostly. Do I think it made any difference when the next plea/demand for funds arrived from home? NO.
