Purpose of scaffold during renovation
Posted by cheeky (334 days ago)
I'm considering having my windows re-done during the renovating of my flat. I am on 1/F and trying to guestimate cost of how much scaffold is needed.
Is it to protect people below from falling debris or for standing on whilst the fitting of windows is being done?

For both. Make also sure that your contractor has a Contractors all risk Insurance. At the end you are responsible when anything happend.

Ask around, but it should be pretty std cost $$/ft of scaffolding required. May also be good to think about checking the waterproofing, a/c's, etc. at the same time, since the scaffolding is up already.

we had our main lounge window ( 3.57 metres wide x 4.5 metres arched window), dining ( bay window and 2 bedroom bay windows, sealed and completely overhauled for $11,000HKD. We are on the top floor though, not sure if that really makes any difference as its the same methodology.
Didnt seem all that bad considering...

thanks vantastic - did that include the scaffold and windows? or just the windows?

that inlcuded all the bamboo scaffolding, replacement of all the window seals, exterior weather repairs etc. There were 4 guys on site and they took a day to assemble the scaffold, 2 days to repair the windows and half a day to disassemble the scaffold.... All inclusive for the 11k...

So you didn't actually replace the windows, but had them resealed. I'm considering replacing the windows which I'm sure will send the price up! But good to know that the 'extras' around it for bamboo and so on isn't too extreme.

No we had no need to replace our windows, I especially love our arched lounge room window which is approx 11 ft wide x 15 ft tall :), one of the biggest windows in a HK residence. But they did have a few leaks which was causing rising damp in the walls that butted up against them, prior to painting / repairing all the interior walls, we decided to fix the leaks from the outside.
Its a very interesting thing to watch them do, the scaffolding was pure class, something you are not likely to see outside of Asia... There's no way OHS back home would ever allow that technique to be addopted anytime soon lol....

If you need scaffold guys, I think they do window replacements also, but don't quote me.
