Return of deposit

Hi,

I'm moving soon and just wondered about getting my deposit back from my current landlord. The place needs painting and stuff, but should I be expected to pay for this? Is it still common practice to withhold the last rental payment rather than wait for the depossit to be returned?

Under normal circumstances, you are not responisble for painting and defects repair for fair wear and tear, unless you have made some excessive damages on the fittings.

If utility acconts are under landlord's name, he has a right to withhold your deposit unless you can prove your payment is paid up to date. Otherwise no excuse to hold further longer than your handover date.
