Best xpat areas to buy in
Posted by Robyn (215 days ago)
We are an xpat family looking to buy in HK, we have lived in Tung Chung for about 5 years and want to move to a bigger home. Unfortunitly we have not really been to many places in Hong Kong and therefore are unsure of the areas we should be looking in to buy.
We have looked at South Lantau if you live in South Lantau could you please advise us of the best xpat area to look in.
We have looked in Sai Kung and although we loved the larger house lifestyle we felt that we may get rather lonely in some of areas we were shown. if you live in Sai Kung could you please advise us of the best xpat area.
If you live in another wonderful xpat area we would dearly love to know where so that we can as our agent to show us these areas.
We apprieciate you advise and time

Hi Robyn, depending on the size of your family - Discovery Bay is a good area for family with children. If you're looking for somewhere easily accessible, Mid-level west is up and coming now with the future MTR station - it has the comfortable space in a very central location..

Hi Robyn,
Sai Kung is great! Good transport to city and schools and plenty of range in places to buy. You will benefit from a car or two depending on where you work. A 2100 sq ft village can be bought for around 7M, but that will probably need work, It is an established area and prices have gone up a lot in the last 12 months. So you may be paying close to top of market...South Lantau is a great area to buy, as I think it will really take off in the next 5 years.... Do loads of research and then go with your gut.. Love to see you in Sai Kung!

Thank you so much for your replies, I have been looking on the net for something in Sheung Sze Wan, Sai Kung but they are all over 10 million.
I hope to find something soon as I would love to be able to have a little more room.
Thanks again for you advice.
Gas Girl - where in Sai Kung do you live?

Royal Palms and Palm Springs in Yuen Long are good value and have good transport.

try pok fu lam. i think its one of the nicest places for an expat family to live without missing out on the essence of hong kong

I fully agree with XTC. Without sounding too over-the-top, my feeling is that Pokfulam is a HK paradise. It's great for families (large-spacious flats), is very dog friendly, has plenty of high-end grocery stores, cinemas, restaurants, parks, South China Sea views, and although prices have gone up over the last year or two, it's still quite reasonable considering what you get.
Good luck in finding the right location for your family!

robyn, i used to live in the village before sheung sze wan. it is quite "out there" and remote if you are lugging a new baby around. also, it is not in sai kung proper, rather it is in clear water bay.
you will find that CWB & sai kung, both, are filled with expats. there's no one area with more than any other.
we now live out in sai kung country park and in our entire village, there are only about 6 locals, my hubby included!
prices in the country park are MUCH cheaper than elsewhere, BUT you MUST have a car to live here.

Hi Cara,
Thanks for the advice. we are looking at a house in a village called Sai Keng Village what do you think. The road in and out in one way.
Thanks again.
Kind regards

sai keng is just down sai sha road between the round-about out of sai kung and ma on shan.
a car would still be very useful, especially with a little one.
although we miss DB terribly, Sai Kung has some really great things going for it. much larger space for less rent(at least where we are) and all of the amenities of DB at a fraction of the cost. village houses are great especially for space.
if you head out this way to have a look, give me a call, i'd be happy to pick you up an show you around a little more, it would also give us a chance to catch up!

Hi Robyn,
You need to find an expat agent to better fulfill your needs. Call John Ng at Sunshine Properties 9658-9866. He's a Brit that speaks fluent English and Chinese. And the most important thing is he works and lives in Sai Kung.
