Yum Cha help please
Posted by Goloh (387 days ago)
If just me and my Chinese friends, no problem finding excellent dim sum all around us. However I will have a visiting western couple and their two young children (ages 6 and 9, who "love dim sum") and will need to find a place near SoHo, Sheung Wan, Western, Cat Street, Man Mo Temple, Hollywood Road area where I can take them for a dim sum lunch. It has to be lunch, and it would be really useful if some of the staff speak some English--so that wonderful Lin Heung on Wellington St. is probably out. Please, can anyone suggest?

Maxim Chinese Restaurant in City Hall, Central is always my favourite. Be warned though, if you get there over the weekend, say after 11pm, be prepared to wait anywhere half to an hour depends, sometimes a table for 4 can take longer time than 6 people. But worth for the waiting.
Good & consistant quality, friendly staff.

Thanks. I had forgotten Maxim. I went there long ago, and yes, they can manage English. Not too keen on a half-hour wait with 6+9 year-olds, though. However, must always be realistic, this is Hong Kong and the places are not set up for my convenience! Must still find out if there's anything at the Peak, as I think we will be up there anyway. Appreciate these suggestions from all of you so far.

I love Dragon-i for dim sum. Great atmosphere outside on the deck with the bird cages and the kids will love the birds too. Good quality food and all you can eat/order price so you can be adventurous or not as takes your fancy. Plus it is different if your friends are used to dining at dim sum at home with the usual boring set up of dim sum from trolleys. A bit classier than your usual dim sum place

PS at Dragon-i you can make a reservation so no need to wait

Thanks, and after these comments I guess I will try Dragon-i with or without kids. One note--lots of places in HK have stopped using the trolleys, so for some visitors that can be the exotic part.

Metropole in Admiralty Centre is a great dim sum place. They have a display in the centre and also the trolleys. The restuarant advise themselves as one that does not use MSG.
