Best Restaurants in Macau
Posted by Ed (1239 days ago)
Of course there's the unspeakable tradition of Fernandos - no English menu and no ketchup (located on Coloanne Island next to the beach - mention Fernando's - all cab drivers know it)
Another favourite has to be Toscano's across from the ferry. Superb Italian food and the tiramisu is probably the best in the world.
A Lorcha, 289A Rua Almirante Sérgio. Tel: 853 313193 (next to the Maritime Museum) This is authentic Portuguese food at its finest.
Any others?

Recommended by FOTH on another thread:
If you prefer not to be quite so stereotypical and avoid Fernando's then I highly recommend a little restaurant called A Petisqueira on Rua Sao Joao in Taipa, tel: (853) 825-354. The fresh cheese is excellent, but you should order it at the beginning of the meal to eat later so that it has time to come up to temperature.

A Lorcha is the one for us!

Er, thanks for the reference Ed...
But on the other hand I have to say (and I fear Ed will edit this) that Pinocchio's was one of the worst dining experiences I have had anywhere. Crap food, crap service, pure tourist trap. A Petisqueira is about 200m away; go there instead.

Fernandos is sooo over rated. Try the Military Officers Club which is members only but the restaurant on the right side after u enter is open to the public. The Mandarin Hotel concierge recommended it to me and had the best food I've found in Macau.

I think you need to wear a dinner jacket at the Military Club

Can anyone recommend a good portugeuse restaurant? (complete with an address!) thanks
Posted by FOTH (1176 days ago)
There are already two recommendations on this thread - A Lorca and A Petisqueira - both with addresses.

you don't need a DJ for the Military Club, but they like you to be smart with shoes, not sandals for the men

Best place I have tried in Macau is called Espaco
pronounced espacio, it's located in coloane just as you arrive at the little town square it's in a side alley/st on the right, it has a small dining room upstairs with a balcony, I am told that's where all the portuguese diplomats go, the price is reasonable, 3 of us once had a 7 hour Sunday lunch there with a bottle of bubbly, 2 or 3 reds, cigars, several ports and of course appetisers, mains and coffee, the bill was bout $1,400.
I have to agree with the above comments regarding Fernando's, it's boring bland food seved on a park bench with wine served in rock glasses

God i find Fernando's service awful. was there recently and vowed never to return. seems like Mr Fernando's been making too much money and doesnt seem to care about customers at all.

My husband and I love A Lorcha too.
Does anyone know of a good lunch place. Just something simple. Nice cafe with sandwiches even.
Thanks!

Is there any place in Macau that has vegan offerings on the menu? I have one child who is allergic to anything that comes from a cow and anything that comes from a chicken. Eliminates a lot of choices. Also need it to be relatively inexpensive, family oriented.

Not sure abt vegan but I love A Lorcha. Huge menu, clean, nice servers.

Fernandos - Forget it!!! Never again....BAD! BAD! BAD! I used to be such a fan of the place 2 years ago....but now....uggh!
Once place that is good is Solmar. Excellent food, decent prices, and an old haunt of the old-time Portugese. Not fine dining, but its a good experience. Located a couple of blocks away from the Lisboa, opposite the Main Branch of HSBC.

Carmen, my husband and I went with your recommendation of Ristorante Platao, and we enjoyed the food. Appreciate you sharing this piece of information.

I have the best italian food at Pizzeria Toscana, as mentioned by someone above. But beware, its original location by the ferry terminal has CLOSED as of last week, but the other (bigger) one is not far, Calcada da Barra No. 2. (opp. Macau Maritime Administration)

Has any one eaten at any of the new Casinos yet? Any recommendations?
Posted by retailjunkie (717 days ago)
The Sands' buffet restaurant -- forget it. Cafeteria-style food at best. I want to see what it's like at Wynn's, though.

Fernandos is for tourists. Go to Solmar near the HSBC Main Branch - 10 mins from Lisboa. Been around for ages, food is fantastic. The CE of Macau dines there regularly, as do most of the last remaining Portugese community. Prices quite reasonable too.

Love Solmar, their crusty rolls are divine.. where do you guys go for the best Afican Chicken? recently went to Dumbo's in Taipa (following HK locals' recommendations) and i swear, i had the worst meal in macau... No sauce on African Chicken and limp salad with dressing tasting like canola oil... Head Henri's Gallery is good though.

I keep seeing people saying "Fernandos is for Tourists"
I golf in macau and i spend a heck of a lot of time there and I have been to loads of restaurants including alorcha.
Sorry but nothing compares to Fernandos food. Start with the garden fresh tomato salad, then you'll want some clams (great sauce for dipping with the clams), garlic prawns, roast chicken and definitely have the roasted ribs. Nice big jug of wine and sit back and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of what is without question not only one of the greatest restaurants in Macau but the world.
And btw you cannot reserve a table in advance and if you show up on Saturday be preparted to wait an hour for a table because the place is heaving (you can sit at the outdoor bar and drink wine while you wait), a place doesnt get this busy unless it serves great food.

I like Antica Trattoria, also 360 cafe buffet at the Tower.

I used to think like Mr Cynical as well until I recently -
a) started trying restaurants other than F's for Macanese/Portugese food
b) decided not to tolerate the often less-than-stellar service.
But I admit the ambience can be quite fun, especially for sangria-chugging large groups!

With all the new casinos and developments - any NEW restaurants in Macau that are good?
