Posted by katyfweaver (1227 days ago)
Singapore is great for laksa! Or make it yourself - really not that hard.

i think i've mentioned this another forum before but i really like the laksa at China Tee Club at pedder bldg, central. For indian, i love Afghan Canteen on Lock road, TST.

Indian Curries:
Veda (Central) does a great lunch buffet or you can order from their menu.
JoJo Mess (Wan Chai) and India Today (SoHo) are both good for your standard dishes.
Khyber Pass in Chingking Mansions is an adventure.
Coco Curry House in 'rats alley' across from LKF does some good Malay style curries with fresh roti.

Which laksa - sour with lots of mint, herbs, black shrimp paste (Penang) or the one with coconut milk sometimes called curry mee (more popular in Southern Malaya/Singapore)?
Bamboo in LKF has some Malaysian dishes, so does Banana Leaf but I wouldn't rate anything in HK above average. Best laksa and other hawker food would be in Penang right at the hawker stalls or specialist food shops, not at the hotels.
Curries at the Excelsior (Dickens Bar) are quite good.

Jojo is great, I think they have one in Causeway bay too. Will give Veda a try some time soon.
Sabi>> I am looking for yummy laksa-swimming-in-coconut-milk.. I agree that its not much of a hotel food, maybe I am better off going to Singapore! Thanks tho! :-)

is the katong laksa in sheung wan the real singapore type laksa with fat vermicilli rice noodles? i prefer that to the malaysian one with hokkien noodles. also... where can you you get the penang "assam" laksa - fishy soup, mint, taramind, clearish soup etc???
any leads would be very much appreciated!

sashimi girl, the laksa at Katong Laksa is with the white fat rice noodles. I don't know any place that sells the Penang laksa. I LOVE penang laksa. Maybe Sabah may have it. I have not been there though.3
Also, if you want to cook your own laksa or mee siam or chicken rice, you can always get the Prima paste from park n shop or wellcome or citysuper. They sell laksa, mee siam, chicken rice, curry, chilli crab, bak kut teh, etc. Citysuper has the most selection.

thanks vvv. the katong place is GOOD! close as we'll ever get to the real thing.
hup loong does a packet for penang laksa. it's just a bunch of dried spices in a paper bag so it's easy to bring back from overseas. and real easy to cook. :)

Indian curry-definitely Bombay Dreams. Lunch buffet is pretty good.

This should probably go in the Recipes section, but seeing as there are die-hard laksa fans here, I figured no one would mind!!
I make a "cheat's version" of laksa using tom yam soup paste (available from most ParkNShops) to make the broth, and then just add a tin of coconut milk... almost as good as the real thing, I swear! Then you can add whatever kind of noodles/meat/tofu/veg you like to it...
Best part: total cooking time is about half an hour!

Someone mentioned the Royal Garden Hotel cafe, North Point, HK. They have stalls with Malaysian/SIngaporean fare.

Try Mrs Chan at Peking Road, TST (near Hyatt, HMV area). Best Nonya food! Laksa and curry better than most Indian restaurants! For best nan go to Cafe Deco at The Peak.

Jashaan above Pacific Coffee on Hollywood never fails to please

This is just my 5 cents worth, Curry-In-A-Hurry at the City Super food courts serves a decent lamb curry. The roti ain't great but u do need something to dip the curry with so it'll do. Forget the fish curry though... And of course, because you're eating at a food court, it ain't expensive.
