Has anyone who was on a work visa changed jobs before? I was just wondering what the procedures for changing a job are if one is on a work visa. Will you have to apply for a brand new work visa or are there procedures for changing the company your work visa is issued under.
In theory, as the employment visa is employer-specific, the process is akin to applying for a new visa in that the new employer still needs to go through the same process of proving why it's necessary to give you the position in preference to a local. However, in practice it all seems to be quite a bit easier. When it comes to the actual time to make the change just be aware of the timing because there are separate requirements to be followed by both the old employer (needs to inform Immigration you are no longer employed) and the new employer (needs to sponsor the new visa application). You probably won't have the luxury of taking some time off between jobs as you might like to do at home, because if you do (and leave HK during that time) when you come back in you'll be on a tourist visa if the new visa hasn't been issued. There's a process to follow. Not sure if it's clear from the Immigration website, but as all of the dealings with the Dept are handled by the employer then the HR DEpt should be well aware of what needs to be done. Good luck.
If a person who is on an employment visa wishes to move onto another job, he should obtain the prior approval of the Director of Immigration by applying for a new employment visa.

Thank you for the replies. Ah so you are subject to the discretion of the immigration department. I was asking this as I've heard about someone who switched jobs and he had to wait around 6 months for the whole process to be completed.
That's probably a bit extreme, but quite possible because yes it must be approved by Immigration who is responsible for issuing visas. It is also likely to take a longer time if the person assumes it is his/her right to change jobs just like he/she would do at home...and then addresses the visa question almost as an afterthought. Immigration tend not to like that.
I have changed jobs several times and the process is not too difficult. There are detailed instructions how to do it and what forms are involved in the online Hong Kong visa handbook on www.emigra.com.hk . Go to the employment visas chapter and find the "Change of Sponsorship Applications" section.
