I am an expat in HK for 3 months now. My employer moved me over here from the US and my manager here in HK is doing everything she can to get me fired.
What are my rights as an employee here? Do they have to give a certain number of warnings before letting someone go? Is there a reference or a link someone could point me in the right direction?
I am in a really bad spot because I have a 2 year lease and have just settled in. Any suggestions or any referrals to a good attorney would be appreciated. Thanks.
after 13 weeks you should have an employment contract which should cover terms for dismissal, else check www.labour.gov.hk.
regarding your manager I was transferred to HK from UK (long long time ago) and suffered much the same treatment. After I managed to solve some of the their local problems, and they realised I was no idiot, everything calmed down.
good luck.
I was in a situation with similarities to yours. The best advice I can give is that you get a lawyer and nip it in the bud straight up - you will hear so many "ifs" "buts" etc. as you do with anything legal, but the fact is you are a foreigner and a new one at that, and will need some help. I recommend that you find an international law firm.
Thank you for your advice. Through careful shopping, I have found a reputable firm for representation who will review my contract and take action. Looks like there is a remedy. Thanks again.

I didn't have the money for a high powered international lawyer, but this company did help me get out of my 3 yr. contract with the employer and head off any further legal problems. If you are seeking compensation for your troubles or reimbursment for repatriation or anything like that, you may be better off going with an international firm, but it will cost you dearly. Best of luck.
