Dear Sir/Madam,

I would be very grateful if you could offer me any advice. I am a recently admitted Australian lawyer with 6 years experience as an English Editor with Japan's largest law firm, (my current employer). I would like to know what the general situation is in terms of seeking work as a solicitor in Hong Kong, or even positions in paralegal-related roles.
I would be very grateful for any advice.

I understand there are firms willing to consider legal professionals for a position as a consultant on the basis that you are able to bring in your own work (which necessarily requires you to have a clientele of your own) or work on matter assigned (typically less of your workload). You are paid a commission on the fees generated by you. I would suggest you send me an email at productpremium@yahoo.com.hk and I can introduce them.

If you are not a Hong Kong admitted lawyer, you are not qualified to work as a solicitor with law firms in Hong Kong except as a “Foreign Lawyer”, a distinction that must be clearly delineated. However, some law firms like Weir & Associates are willing to offer you a consultant position on the basis that you have a clientele of your own. The minimum amount of such work, in monetary terms, will also need to be agreed upon.

In addition there are “paid” projects that will arise from time to time that are agreed on an ad hoc basis.
