If you're an iPhone user now, it's better to buy another one (upgrade) as you can bring your purchased apps with you. If you're a new smartphone user, I would start with an Android as the handsets are a lot cheaper - but offers the same services. Just my thoughts...

Android offers a lot of things you can change on your own that Apple IOS won't allow you. It makes it more difficult to learn, but if you're up to it you may enjoy it too. However, if you've invested in many paid IOS apps, what are you going to do with them? Just ditch them? And as you've mentioned you've been a long time Apple user, so it might be too difficult for you to change.
The only reason you may want to move to Android is if you want to experiment. I use both, and they're both okay (at least to me).
