Check the manufacturers website to see if it is a known problem. Sometimes these problems will be repaired beyond the end of warranty period.
Also do a google on the camera and see if others are having the same problem, and you might find a solution.
Any chance it's a Canon Axx series?

Thanks for your replies, Canon want $200 just to look at it so thought I would try somewhere else if recommended.
The viewing screen (not sure of technical term) is broken, I think caused by being thrown around carelessly in a rucksack! It's a Canon ixus 500 so not sure if that falls within your Axx series tmk??

I understand the dilemma with an inexpensive camera, but i have to say the Canon repair center in Wanchai provided me an excellent service after dropping my Pro DSLR, smashing both the body and the lens.

Is the LCD physically broken, ot you think it is broken because of distorted pictures?
