Lamma? Take a ferry to one side, walk to the other, via beaches, town etc. Have lunch at a seafood restaurant and take the other ferry back. Obviously the 1 year old could not do the walk, so you'll need a buggy or backpack (the steep bits with the buggy in the heat are quite a workout).

Sai Kung? Stroll along the waterfront. Take a sampan out to one of the islands.

Shek O and Big Wave Bay? I know that we are talking about more beaches, but they have a real holiday feel. Remind me of Greek holiday resorts in the 70's. The Thai restaurant in Shek O is excellent and they seem to love children. Parking is a nightmare if you are not there early though.

Have not been yet, but cable car to Big Buddha?

Disney?

If you want to spend a bit more for a special occassion, how about a helicopter trip followed by lunch at the Peninsula?

Lamma ferries go from just behind the IFC (although you can get there from Aberdeen too, just not sure where).

www.heliservices.com.hk gives you details of helicopter tours. They fly from the Peninsula.

Once you get to the waterfront at Sai Kung, you will have dozens of old ladies offering you Sampan rides.

Also, you could go ice skating in Taikoo Shing (not the 1 year old though).

Get the book Hong Kong for (maybe "with") Kids. Gives directions on how to get to a whole bunch of places, tells you if there are bathrooms with changing tables, what age the sight is suitable for, if there is food avail, etc. Great resource.
