Helper Unwell

Our helper has become ill. After seeking medical advice from three doctors she has said she doesn't want help from anyone. She is not doing her work as she is tired and of course says she is sick. She sleeps on and off throughout the day and is refusing to carry out small tasks. We have been very sympathic and have tried to get to the bottom of the problem but we have had no success. Has anyone being in this situation before? We are very sad about what has happened to her but feel if she does not want our help then we cannot keep her employed with us. If her position is terminated does anyone know of a help group (which speaks Indonesian) we can refer her too which can help with her problems and reluctance to seek help? Naturally, we have paid for all medical expenses but this still does not convince her she needs medical assistance.

Hi MLC

If your helper is Indonesian, is she currently fasting for Ramadan? This may account for her not feeling well, tiredness etc, & may perhaps be a bit reluctant to mention it to you. Would be very difficult to do household tasks when hungry/a bit dehydrated during the day, and understandably would feel a bit worn out. Just a thought, hope she is better soon, & you don't have to lose her! Am not Moslem , but feel it cant be easy to fast during the day, as well as undertake spiritual commitments & do a long days' work as well. Hope it works out for her & you

Thanks for your thoughts Kiwozzie. Yes we have been very accomadating and supporting of Ramadan but Doctors believe it is more than that. As the Quran does say that if it makes you ill to stop fasting - she has snacked a couple of times to get her through the day this hasn't helped.

We had a similar situation. Our helper (Filipina) was sick, we took her to see a doctor, he prescribed her medications, but she refused to take them. She said she does not want to take antibiotics, because people can die after it!

I do understand that some people do not want to take medications due to various reasons. But then they have to do something about their condition.

Mango - Yep first thing we checked and NO. We have since had advice that sadly she is unstable and needs medical attention. An Indonesian Dr. and 2 Expat Dr's have come to the same conclusion. It is all very sad.

Why don't you phone ID and explain the situation to them, thatshe has been unable to do her job for somwtime, that you have taken her to several Dr's but she refuses to follow their advice, maybe get a letter from the Dr backing you up, and ask them if this is grounds for termination. Or whether you can at least reduce her wages to a reduced level of sickness pay.

I'm afraid, no matter what, you can not fire a sick employee. FDH Guide clearly states it.

Talk to the agency you hired her through. They were supposed to check her health before she came here. If she has some chronic illness, they were supposed to let you know before signing the contract.
