Hits and unique visitors are your most meaningful measures here. Contrary to what Ed suggests, hits are not meaningless, and are in fact a very useful statistic -- perhaps less so in the context of selling advertising!
There is no such thing as an "average" hitrate. Some sites generate tens of millions of hits a day. Sites will vary drastically in popularity.
I am assuming you want to promote you services so generally you would like your website to attract as many hits as possible. There are many ways to promote your site, from optimising for search engines to advertising to affiliate programmes.
There is a whole science to it, if your budget allows you may want to hire a consultant.
