To save cost, I am planning a trip to Beijing leaving from Shenzhen airport. The price is way cheaper then flying from HK, though I live in HK. Has anyone done this, do you think the savings justify the hassle? Is it going to be a nightmare? Thanks for any advice

it's pretty straight forward and only takes marginally more time than going to hk airport. we do it all the time.
i recommend taking the direct bus from hk to sz airport (100 hkd) from wan chai ferry terminal (assuming you live in hk island). else they also depart from other places.
alternatively take a cross border bus to lok ma chau and then a taxi (120 RMB) from there.

Absolutely when flying to mainland China destinations from Shenzhen/Guangzhou is cheaper and easy to do compared to HKIA
