Opening a bank account in Hong Kong

ORIGINAL POST

We moved from Caribbean to Hong Kong week ago. Ever since we moved we are trying to get a bank account opened.Despite the fact that my husband works for a reputable Swiss bank in Hong Kong, we were told by HSBC and Standard Chartered that we cannot open an account in Hong Kong just because we are Sri Lankan nationals. It was shocking and frustrating. Can someone pls advise how can we get a bank account opened?

Last year a bank in HK got in trouble for assisting money laundering associated with terrorist organisations. Since then they have been required to seek additional documentation from citizens of certain countries (or possibly they are covering themselves).

Approach the bank again and ask what they need. Often this includes employment contract, school enrolment confirmation, rental agreement. In short...anything that proves you live here and are intending to stay.

Yes it is annoying, yes it is descrimatory but unless you want to take them to court, it is easier to product the documents.
