Hair Extensions in Hong Kong?

Posted by rachaelhk (May. 31, 04)

Anyone know of a place that does Hair Extensions in Hong Kong?

Any experience with that place? I know that HipPhish does, but

I've heard very mixed reviews. Any other place? Know what

process they use, sewing, glue, or Hairloc?

Thanks!

Good luck - I've given up - I'm going to the US in a week and will look in Chicago.

Ozone does real and synthetic hair extensions. I've heard that they are fantastic and will be using them myselves for hair extensions at some point. They use glue I think, but you should check to make sure. They're in central behind marksnspencers.

Rachael,

There are a few places that do them, Ozone is one, Rever is another, O4, private I, HIp, just to name a few. The quality and price varies.

I also have a range of real hair extensions that are the glue in type. I have a large sample chart if you would like to take a look any time. Depending of what your needs are we can use different thickness of hair as to help control the cost. You can cantact The Hairdressers or just drop by if you want to take a look.

I discovered a place today called triple edge K in Century Square.

They use the Hairloc system. There's a stylist there named Calvin

who does them and speaks good English.

The only issue is the price, they are HK$80 per strand. In the

Hairloc system the strands are supposed to be reusable though.

Does anyone have any experience with this stylist or this system?

I'm wondering how the plastic locs feel, both from my perspective

and from that of anyone who just might want to run their hands

through my hair...: )

rachaelhk

(Jun. 1, 04)

Ah, yes, and the place I mentioned above charges $20 to remove

the strands. I suppose this is the same price to adjust them.

white rabbit

(Jun. 1, 04)

to rachael, I have a pony tail extension that I purchased from Australia, it was about 2500hkd and is not real hair, I would only ever get real hair extensions as they will feel natural and and will last much longer. the other thing is is that real hair is able to be re coloured and synthetic is not, its really hard to get an exact match between your real hait and synthetic extensions.

Jeans

(Jun. 1, 04)

what's the difference between hairloc and glue? how does it work?

rachaelhk

(Jun. 1, 04)

Thanks, The extensions I mentioned above are real hair.

The hairloc system uses tiny plastic beads, though which the

extension strand is pulled and then attached to your hair at the

scalp, then the bead is crimped to keep it in place. Every 3-6

months it needs to be adjusted, as your hair grows out. A friend

told me they are practically unnoticable.

I got my hair extension (hairloc) in Wanchai 2 weeks ago and I love it! It costs $2,500 for the whole head and it took just a bit over 4 hrs. The stylist even put in some other color to make the highlighting effect. However, I doubt the stylist speaks English; her colleagues may tho. Her's name's Edith. You can check out their website

http://www.be-labo.com/

I actually posted a question on their message board b4 getting the extension done.

HTH.

rachaelhk

(Jun. 1, 04)

Wow, jlmy, that's an INCREDIBLE price--thanks so much!

For that price, may I ask, is it human hair or synthetic?

How do you like the hairloc system? I've been told that you

almost can't feel them, is that right? Thanks for the info, I'm

definitely going to give them a call! (Do they also have different

colors available? I'm a blonde--not so common here in the

Chinese salons, alas!)

white rabbit

(Jun. 2, 04)

rachael, I asked Robbie at ozone today and he quoted me 2500-3000 for a full head of real hair extensions.

(30 hkd per strand) he said for a half head he would use around 50 strands and for a full head he would use around 80-100 strands. He also said it would take about 2 weeks to order the blonde extensions for me.

rachaelhk

(Jun. 2, 04)

Thanks so much for the information! Does Robbie use Hairloc or

glue? I've heard that glue can be done badly...Hairloc is reusable,

which will cut WAY down on the cost.

Rachael

white rabbit

(Jun. 2, 04)

Rachael,

robbie does glue extensions , that would explain why he quoted me the same price for any touch ups, he did however say they just re heat the glue and then move the pieces closer to your scalp again. I will look at the hair loc system too.

oyster

(Jun. 2, 04)

It has taken months to finally get someone to give us quotes in Asiaxpat. I think it's about the same price as the states now.

Thanks everyone.

jlmy

(Jun. 2, 04)

Hey Rachael, mine's real human hair. Whether or not the hairloc's reusable I have no clue but the stylist told me that it's much easier to take off when needed. The glue however, is difficult to remove and might damage our hair. As for the color, you have to go and let the stylist match the color for you which takes less than 5 mins. You can go back for touch ups within 2 weeks after getting it done. I've got mine done for over 2 weeks now and I'm confident to say that no one knows it's not my hair! But I do have to adjust the way I wash my hair. Now I have to wash it gently with my fingers, NOT my finger nails.

One thing I wanna remind you is that I don't think the stylist speaks English so do communicate thoroughly with the ones who do in order to get the result you desire.

Jlmy,

your hair extensions price for 2500; was this inclusive of highlighting your hair??

STS

(Jun. 16, 04)

Any place to extend hair in Guzngzhou or Shenzhen? Thanks

jlmy

(Jun. 19, 04)

Jeans:

Yup! The highlight is part of the extension, just in diff color.

Summer's coming and it might be a lil hot to get it now tho.

oyster

(Jun. 22, 04)

Do you know if the roots at the crown of our head can be done and the fringe? I;d like to have more fullness on top like a scaled down Tina Turner.

rachaelhk

(Jun. 23, 04)

I was told that roots at the part cannot be done without looking bad. I don't

exactly know whether that's true for everyone, or only people with blonde

hair, because the metal sleeve for the hairloc system is black. I think that

glued in extensions can be done at the part.

I'm going in early July to Be Labo salon and will let you all know my

results. The stylist doesn't speak much English, but there is a guy there

who translates and they were both very helpful. And the price is great!

oyster

(Jun. 23, 04)

jimy did you have your roots or fringe done too?

Jeans

(Jun. 23, 04)

rachael,

please do let us know all the details once you get yours done, it would be very helpful. Also where exactly is this Be-labo salon?? is it nice?

thanx!

Darrin

(Jun. 23, 04)

Oyster, you can have extensions done to add volume to the crown and fringe as long as there is enough hair left to cover the joining areas. It does not look good if u can see the joins.

CatKit

(Jun. 23, 04)

oyster, I didn't have my roots done cuz I was also told by the stylist that it wouldn't look good as the the extention would start extending sideway once our hair grows. Need not to worry about the fullness tho, once I got the extension, my hair has so much volume! Of course, if you don't like it you can always tell the stylist to give you a haircut as if it's your real hair. I myself had played with my new hair for a day until I know how to style it to my likings. I do want to let you ladies know that it's getting a bit hot now that summer's here!

Jeans

(Jun. 24, 04)

to catkit:

where may i ask did u get your hair extensions done?

CatKit

(Jun. 25, 04)

Be-labo. Think jlmy listed its URL above. As of today, only 3 strands fell out (due to my carelessness) and I've got the extensions for over 1 month. I like my extensions but that's only becuz I play with it and find out the way to style it. It didn't look as good as the way it is now when first got. Similar to getting a new haircut, you have to play with it a little until you know how to style it. I bought a jar of hairwax and volia! everything's in place and it's so easier to manage my new hair! Make sure you know how to use hairwax though!

Jeans

(Jun. 25, 04)

was urs the same price as jlmy? $2500 for everything - including highlights? and also, did they use the hairloc system for you?

rachaelhk

(Jul. 12, 04)

Hi everyone,

Thought I would post my experience, since I started the thread this

time...I went about a week ago to Be-labo salon in Wanchai.

Someone asked if it was nice, I'd have to say, no. It's funky, a very

small storefront salon, very chinese, it's crowded and there's a big

dog that lays around the floor. I was the only Westerner in there

either time I went, so prepare to be gawked at. Edith is the woman

who does the extensions, and she doesn't not speak much

English. She didn't seem particularly excited to do mine, but

nonetheless she did them quickly and did a great job. Kenneth is

there and his English is good--he's happy to translate. I was

originally told it would take 4 hours, but I got there a bit late (it's

hard to find cause the streets aren't labelled, at least as far as I

could tell) and she'd already started cutting someone else's hair. I

got shampooed, dryed, and combed out--that took about 40

minutes; and then the extensions themselves took only 2 hours.

She said she put 140 strands in my hair, and she went much

higher up toward my middle part than she'd originally said. I was

surprised and concerned that the hairloc beads would show, but

they don't most of the time. I have to be very careful about

changing my part---she put them in with a center part and the

beads don't show at all. I can side-part, but I need to watch where

that goes so that the beads don't show. The beads are black, so

on black hair that wouldn't matter so much, but I'm a pretty light

blonde. I hope that in the US or UK there are beads to match the

hair color, but Be-labo didn't seem to have them. I didn't think to

ask in advance if they could be ordered. The whole thing cost me

$2660--a great price. Kenneth said it would be $300 and take

about an hour to remove or adjust them, and they'll need

adjustment in about 3 months.

The positives--I've got thick, great long hair now! I went to my

regular hairdresser, at Paul Gerrard's, and they were all amazed.

Robin said they were the best hair extensions he'd ever seen, and

called the other stylists around to look, and everyone was REALLY

astounded at the price, too. In fact, they didn't recognized the

extensions as extensions until I told them. So Edith and Be-labo

get a HUGE recommendation there.

The negatives--I've lost three strands so far. I've got to be REALLY

careful about brushing or combing my hair now. Shampooing,

likewise, and they sold me an extra strength conditioner. The

metal beads in my hair took some getting used to--the first day they

were pretty uncomfortable and I had trouble sleeping cause I felt

them digging into my head. The extensions get tangled easily

when I sleep--I guess I should get a silk pillowcase but when I

used to have one, the darn pillow kept sliding out from under my

head! And they're a bit frizzy in this humidity. I'm trying some new

product today, so far it seems to work well.

All in all, I have to report a great success. I do wonder whether

glue extensions might be better suited to me, and I suppose if I do

it again I'll try to talk to Kenneth and Edith about that. I believe that

they do glue-in extensions. My other hairdresser had extreme

reservations about glue because of how much it can damage the

natural hair.

That's my report--good luck everyone!

I will also be doing my hair extensions in Be-labo, I've already been in once to look at the hair extensions and discuss prices etc. I have a consultaton this wednesday for them to order in my hair, I'll be using 150 pieces and they will also be using those metal beads on me, fortunately I have dark brown hair so the colour of the should match almost fine. I'm getting them put in on friday and am very excited to see the results as well.

Just a question Rachael, how long was ur natural hair before? and how much longer did u get ur extensions to reach upto?

Thanks!

rachaelhk

(Jul. 12, 04)

My hair was a few inches below the shoulder, now it's halfway

down my back. I probably gained about 6 inches, but the amount I

gained in thickness is really important, too. Don't know how to

explain that except to say that I used to need three turns of a

ponytail holder and almost a fourth to hold it, now I can barely

make two turns....

RockStar

(Jul. 12, 04)

Fantastic, thickness of hair is priority to me as well. As long as there is a very noticeable difference in thickness I should be very pleased as well.

(Jul. 12, 04)

rachael, are your extensions real hair?

rachaelhk

(Jul. 13, 04)

Yes, my extensions are real human hair, which is why it's such a

great deal!

Boredtotears

(Jul. 13, 04)

Wow, thanks for the info. I have also wanted to do extensions. So when you put your hair up high in a pony tail the beads don't show?

RockStar

(Jul. 13, 04)

even if you have hair down the beads won't show

rachaelhk

(Jul. 14, 04)

With the way my extensions are done, it's not so much a matter of

whether my hair's up or down, it's where the part is or how far off

my face my hair is. If I've parted on the side they might show, and if

I have the hair pulled well away from my face they might show. I

should say that even if they DO show, they don't look terrible--they

are less noticeable than a bobby pin, for example.

jlmy

(Jul. 14, 04)

Glad that you're happy with the results Rachael!!

Mine's been 2 months now and I've only lost 5 strands. I use stand up shower to wash my hair instead of leaning forward. Also I rub my hair gently instead of scratching my scalp. I got used to this within a week and I do hope that you do too. Oh one last thing, rmbr to use wide tooth comb!

RockStar

(Jul. 15, 04)

Great, I'm getting mine done tomorrow and am well excited. Will let you guys all know my results!

RockStar

(Jul. 15, 04)

jilmy, do your beads show in anyway??

jlmy

(Jul. 19, 04)

Forgot to mention that I'm an asian with black hair so no, my beads hardly show and no one could tell I got extensions.

RockStar

(Jul. 19, 04)

Hi everyone.

Just got my hair extensions at Be-labo the other day...wow they are so long!

She put 150 pieces in my hair, because my hair in naturally dark brown , she just used the same colour beads for my hair so it doesn't show.

I've gained a lot in thickness, but I'd say probably more in length. Most people couldn't even tell the difference on me, I had to tell them I had hair extensions!

Either way, they did a fabulous job. The only thing that bothers me a little is the fact that if someone touches or runs their hands through my hair they can feel it.

Can't say my bf is too keen on them. Either way, I love them!

curiousgrrrl

(Jul. 20, 04)

to jlmy: you mentioned you are asian, so am i...i went to this salon and they only had a couple options for my dark hair - one was a black that was way too black, the next was one was a sort of brownish color that seemed lighter than my hair, but edith said it would look ok - did you get this color? how is it?

rachaelhk

(Sep. 3, 04)

Well, the summer's pretty much over and I wonder how those of us

who had the extensions feel about them after having them some

time. My experience wasn't very good, I'm afraid. They did look

great, but they started tangling early on and I lost a number of them

trying to get the tangles out. Now, two months later, I probably

have less than half of them still in. They didn't stand up well to

dancing or swimming and really tangled badly. I don't know if I'm

gonna bother to have them redone, although I loved the look.

Anyone else?

Scotgirl

(Sep. 3, 04)

The old adage of you get what you pay for certainly applies to hair extensions. I have had two types done - monofibre and real hair with bonding system and on blonde hair the real hair is so much better. On darker hair the monofibre works just as well. It is really worth paying a decent hairdresser to do them - you will get 3-4 months wear from them, the bonds should not show at all and you should not get too much fall out (some is inevitable). It is also really important to take great care when washing and brushing and equally buy a decent ie. expensive brush. The best shampoo I have found to avoid the tangling is Origins Knot Free followed by the Knot Free Finishing Rinse. You won't then be tempted to yank the hair when brushing. If you are going to spend a lot of money on extensions it is worth looking after them to maximise their usage and also you don't want everyone staring wondering if its your hair or not. You just want everyone to assume it is!

Hello! I know this a late link to this chain of messages - however ideally LOVE the sound and price of the Be-labo extensions and am wondering if they still do them in Wan Chai? Any other recommendations would also be beneficial as I am traveling to HK in two days time and would love to get them done. Many thanks girls x
