Do apartments here usually have electrical safety switches?

Just arrived in HK from Oz. Back home we had 'safety switches' on the main electricity board. So if say my naughty toddler poked metal through the powerpoint, the electricity would automatically cut off before he would get electrocuted.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

You should have a fuse box / circuit breaker. This is usually in the kitchen (out of kids' reach) and has multiple switches responding to each area of the flat, plus master one for the whole flat. The relevant area switch will trip to prevent overloading, etc.

Fuse box or jump gauge circuit breaker are required. So you should definitely have one.

No residential circuit breaker is intended to child proof your home. (in HK or Oz) The voltage is too high (220 volts.) Circuit breakers usually have a tripping threshold of 5 amps or higher. Plenty to, ahem.... The way to childproof power outlets is to plug them up with childproof covers.
