Moving stuff to UK

ORIGINAL POST

Hello all, I'm moving home soon and looking around for a good moving company but am getting totally fed up finding one that doens't have a 100 cubic foot minimum. I've got three quotes that are all over 10k which is crazy.

Has anyone found a mover that will move 7-8 boxes and not charge me for 100 cubic foot which i think is around 30 boxes !

My stuff is low value so it really doesn't make sense to spend this much but I would rather take it home.

Also, does anyone know if I will have to pay tax on the stuff that I bought here - artwork, clothes, nintendo wii.....

thanks

Hong Kong Post Office may be a good option http://www.hongkongpost.com/chi/index.htm

HK Post is probably your best bet as suggested, they do have a bulk service. Regarding your tax question, I cannot see the British Government levying a tax on returnees belongings purchased abroad, it does not seem either practical or very fair, but I dont know this for a fact and neither of those two reasons have ever stopped governments from imposing taxes in the past.

Typically there is no tax on personal belongings so long as you can reasonably prove that it is for your own use. If you bring home, say, twenty brand new cameras in the original packaging you would have issues. But one camera, even bought the day before you leave, should not raise eyebrows.

Keep receipts as well. If you've owned it for more than 6 months or so they would not consider it "for resale" but "yours".

Hi homewardbound.

I too am moving back to the UK soon and haven't found a cheaper option. I'm reluctant to use the PO though as a friend of mine had her stuff caught at customs and then had to pay duty to release it. Check carefully customs regulations, I think it is duty free if you have owned it more than 6 months, but please don't go on my advice.

Let me know if you find anything.

Thanks

You could try www.thebaggagecompany.com - I haven't personally tried it, and saw its ad in a free newspaper. This company is apparently able to send small quantities of personal stuff to UK, Australia and USA. Prices claim to start from HKS$1,800 for a 22x44x22 inch box. Claims to have no minimum requirements or hidden costs.

However you will want to ensure, as Toucanlaughter pointed out, that everything is done correctly and you will not have customs issues where you sent your items. Hope this helps, and good luck.

Hello all and thank you for your replies. I've looked into this a bit further and I've found three providers (two from you plus another one). Here is my experience so far, I'll let you know when I actually ship my stuff too:

1 - Post office. Agree with Toucan Laughter here, talk about making it difficult to use their service. It took me ages to work out how much it will cost and it wasn't even that cheap. The big no no for me though it my proximity to and opening hours of the 'local' sorting office where I'd have to pick it up.

2 - www.baggagexs.com - seem to specialise in shiping small volumes and don't have a minimum volume as far as I could see. My quote looks great at HKD 3,950 for 6 boxes a painting and a carpet. Customer service has been good and they have been happy to ship my painting and carpet that don't fit in boxes. I haven't confirmed with them yet but I think I will

3 - www.thebaggagecompanie.com - very similar to the above company but I haven't been very impressed. Prices look good but didn't seem to pay much resembalance to the quote and you can only use one size box. Certainly cheaper and more attractive option compared to the bigger moving companies but not as cheap for me as the other baggage company. Customer service hasn't been very responsive either.

RE: Tax and duty, I've been advised that if it is personal belongings and owned for more than 6 months then it is duty free. I might have to age a couple of things with a layer of dust !

Indeed. And I wouldn't worry about the "less than 6 months" items. If the stuff is for personal use there should not be an issue. You typically get "reasonable doubt".

Try Sevenseas (U.K. Company) , can't remember their full name. They will transport 7 or 8 boxes effeciently. Search them on the internet, they have offices worldwide.

I don’t recommend BaggagXS for moving to the UK, it is not BaggagXS when it gets to the UK, they use local agents. Although the HK end of the operation seemed to give excellent service, this all changed once my boxes arrived in the UK the local shipping company was unresponsive, unprofessional and extremely rude, almost as if they thought they were doing me a favour. BaggagXS also lost interest once my boxes left Hong Kong. If you are shipping overseas try and make sure it really is the same company at each end.

I know this is an old thread, but anyone can comment on more shippers for small quantities? Esp to NY/USA?
