We bought our car from Vin's Motor Company, Tommy is the guy we dealt with. He was really good - www.vinsmotors.com.hk. We saw what we liked online then sent an email and organised a day to go out and look at those cars and others in our price range and style we wanted. he also helped us with paperwork and renewal of our rego, etc.

Many dealers around. Best places are the car supermarkets. Most well known is at the HITEC centre in Kowloon Bay. 2 floors full of used cars, everything from Mini's to Lambo's. DCH motors has a huge selection of used cars, Autoforum in Cheung Sha Wan (not to be confused with the car supermarket at the old abattoir) are all good places to look

If you value your life, the lives of loved ones and friends who may be in your car and do not want to be cheated I would advise you to ignore the above posts. Buy your cars privately and get them checked by a mechanic you trust. Language/culture barriers are merely a small inconvenience compared to what you may end up experiencing. Ed doesnt like me posting websites where you can buy cars from privately (except for his own website) so msg me if you want them.

How alarmist is that? Have you heard of AA? Who would buy a car without inspection? And if you think private is the best way to go, good luck............More rebuilt write-offs sold privately than elsewhere........
Ever been in the business here? I have and can tell you a fair few stories...

I suggest if you buy second hand, buy the most popular like toyota corolla or picnic and honda civic or stream. these have good resale value and are the most popular. rovers, bmw's , volvos, saabs, peugot etc might be good in other countries but they are a mess here. new honda and toyota are also good value and reliable.

Do I need to sign a contract with the private owner when purchasing a car?

there is some local HK autotrader link
www.car8.com
www.28car.com
when you are buying a private car or not, try to minimize your Deposite as much as possible. couple of thousand is more than enough to show your sincerity.
Good luck

Definitely get your car checked before buying and if the place you are buying from wont let you or demands a deposit first be very wary.
I have had my cars checked at HP Cars, western owned and run garages in Sai Kung and Chai Wan.
I have to diverge in opinion from MrS. I have had BMW's (and a couple of Mercedes) mainly and because there is a parallel import, the parts are far cheaper and more widely available than other car parts, which are controlled by the dealers.
so if you are buying new and have a warranty for a few years perhaps the Japanese brands are the way to go, but if as your posts suggests you want 2nd hand, go for a BMW or Mercedes and get it checked out before you buy.
As far as I know there is no need to sign a contract with a dealer or a private purchase unless you are going for finance which some of the dealers can help you arrange.
