Air Purifiers

Posted by Ed (428 days ago)
We're gonna try an experiment with an integrated ad campaign that allows our audience to interact directly with an advertiser to discuss a product.
Our first attempt at this will involve Renaud Lifestyle Products who have just launched a new air purification system to Hong Kong.
Bit of background on the founder of Renaud Lifestyle Products, Iannique Renaud, a Canadian expat.
His concern with the air quality in Hong Kong and China (he has a young son and is aware that the pollution is a major cause of asthma / airborne diseases) lead him to search for a reasonably priced and effective air purification system. Most of the products he found were massively expensive or did not offer a complete solution.
He was able to obtain exclusivity for Hong Kong for one of the top brands out of the USA (Alen Corp) - a series of air purifiers that offer complete protection for a reasonable price.
We'll be adding a link to this forum from Renaud's ad later tonight - if you have any questions or comments (or you want to buy an air purifier...) fire away here - Iannique is standing by...

What does " complete protection" mean?

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (428 days ago)
That's a very good question. I believe any brand stating complete protection is simply not stating the true facts.
Using a high quality air purifier will eliminate the harmful bacteria, pollen, and mold found in most homes or offices to about 99%. It is possible to get very significant, although not complete protection from viruses through the use of a high quality air purifier that uses a "True Hepa Filter" (not one of the so called Hepa imitation filters that many brands use to reduce cost)
This is why after months of research we have decided to go with Alen Corporation who on independant tests have outperformed the most expensive brands.
Simply great value!
We just edit this post as of December 1st 2008 to inform all AsiaXpat member that the A375UV has finally arrived to Hong Kong. For people that know air purifiers it has comparable performance to IQ air but is 2 to 3 times cheaper.

What about all the doctors who say that eliminating most of the bacteria and viruses leads to homes that are too clean and may be hindering the immune systems of our children from developing to their full potential?
Posted by Fieter (428 days ago)
Is it true that NO purifier can actually effectively remove industrial/transport pollution - the particles are too small???
We don't need mold and bacteria and pollen cleaned out of our air - we need soot and CO2 and whatever else the factories and exhaust pipes spew into our air removed - this is never mentioned in air purifier advertising!!!
Posted by busywoman (428 days ago)
How does this product compare with the Swissair? I have a Swissair, and bought it because it was reported to be the only air purifier that could cope with the SARS situation.
How would your machine compare with this machine should SARS break out again?
Posted by Fieter (427 days ago)
Well Renaud I will most likely buy one of your purifiers in November when I move due to my wife having some allergy issues.
The sad thing is however that there is still nothing that can protect us against the industrial pollution of China....
Posted by Janicka (427 days ago)
I would lik to know more about thei air purifier.Just thinking about byuing one and not sure which one is the best..How much does this one cost????

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (426 days ago)
Dear Janika,
Only air purifiers like the PARALDA that use "True" HEPA Media filters should be used. The filter was developed during World War II by the Atomic Energy Commission and it was designed to remove and capture radioactive dust particles from the air which might escape and present a health hazard to the researchers. The "True" HEPA filter was specifically designed to protect the Human Respiratory System. Even the CDC guidelines (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) for the transmission of tuberculosis (TB) recommend that only HEPA filters with an efficiency of 99.97% tested at 0.3 microns particle size be used.
To answer your next question - WHAT ARE MICRONS?
A micron is a measure of length: "1 micron equals 1 millionth of a meter!". A particle that is 10 microns or less in size is not visible to the naked human eye.
Examples of some common air contaminants and their size in microns:
* Respirable Suspended Particulates (Industrial Pollution) ..(< 10 microns)
* Human Hair ......................................... (70 - 100 microns)
* Human Sneeze ................................. (10 - 100 microns)
* Pet Dander .......................................... (0.5 - 100 microns)
* Pollen ................................................... (5 - 100 microns)
* Spores from Plants .............................. (6 - 100 microns)
* Mold...................................................... (2 - 20 microns)
* Smoke ................................................... (.01 - 1 micron)
* Dust Mite Debris ................................. (0.5 - 50 microns)
* Household Dust ................................. (.05 - 100 microns)
* Skin Flakes ........................................... (0.4 - 10 microns)
* Bacteria................................................. (0.35 - 10 microns)
Its important to know this vital information to understand which air purifiers can effectively eliminate various contaminants.
Hope this helps!

Fieter has a point. Mold, bacteria and pollen have been in the air for millions of years and the human body can deal with them. With pollution, it can't.

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (426 days ago)
Due to growing concern with pollution I went ahead and asked this question to the C.E.O of Alen Corporation -
“Our air purifiers have UV lamps which can take care of bacteria as well as a permanent titanium dioxide filter that in combination with the UV lamps creates a PCO (photo-catalytic oxidation) process that removes certain gases in industrial pollution such as formaldehyde and VOC’s. The base filter for this unit is part HEPA and part activated carbon for light odor control.
We also have another filter that is exclusive to us (patented technology) that uses a special powder that chemically eliminates specific gases in industrial pollution. The powder we are using is optimized for the removal of smoke gases/odors and ammonia. The advantage over carbon filters is since we are not storing the gases they cannot be re-released (which carbon eventually does because it acts as an absorbent) and the amount of carbon to remove these gases is to large to put inside an air purifier whereas we only require a relatively small amount to eliminate these gases.

Since exposure to the risks of exposure to VOC's is not well known we thought it would be appropriate to add additional information about this topic. Sorry its a little long but worth the read!
Organic Gases (Volatile Organic Compounds - VOCs)
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids inside your home. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as copiers and printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions.
Organic chemicals are widely used as ingredients in household products. Paints, varnishes, and wax all contain organic solvents, as do many cleaning, disinfecting, cosmetic, degreasing, and hobby products. Fuels are made up of organic chemicals. All of these products can release organic compounds while you are using them, and, to some degree, when they are stored.
EPA's Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) studies found levels of about a dozen common organic pollutants to be 2 to 5 times higher inside homes than outside, regardless of whether the homes were located in rural or highly industrial areas. Additional TEAM studies indicate that while people are using products containing organic chemicals, they can expose themselves and others to very high pollutant levels, and elevated concentrations can persist in the air long after the activity is completed.
Health Effects
Eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, loss of coordination, nausea; damage to liver, kidney, and central nervous system. Some organics can cause cancer in animals; some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans. Key signs or symptoms associated with exposure to VOCs include conjunctival irritation, nose and throat discomfort, headache, allergic skin reaction, dyspnea, declines in serum cholinesterase levels, nausea, emesis, epistaxis, fatigue, dizziness.
The ability of organic chemicals to cause health effects varies greatly from those that are highly toxic, to those with no known health effect. As with other pollutants, the extent and nature of the health effect will depend on many factors including level of exposure and length of time exposed. Eye and respiratory tract irritation, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders, and memory impairment are among the immediate symptoms that some people have experienced soon after exposure to some organics. At present, not much is known about what health effects occur from the levels of organics usually found in homes. Many organic compounds are known to cause cancer in animals; some are suspected of causing, or are known to cause, cancer in humans.

Hi, may i ask a few questions?
(1) how long does it take to replace the filters?
(2) how much do the filters cost ?
(3) Would all particles/waste/dust be hiding inside the machine?
(4) When the machine is turned on in a super quiet room at night, would any sound be heard?
(5) How much electricity would be used per hour? (i.e. watt ?)
(5) Do you have showroom ?

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (425 days ago)
Dear Lily,
Were excited about the Paralda because its the first air purifier that is completely lead free, ozone safe, and Energy star qualified by the U.S Department of Energy and U.S Environmental Protection Agency. Some AX members have questioned whether an air purifier can help with industrial air pollution.
Fieter quoted “The sad thing is however that there is still nothing that can protect us against the industrial pollution of China....’’
ShrinkingV “”Fieter has a point. Mold, bacteria and pollen have been in the air for millions of years and the human body can deal with them. With pollution, it can't.’”
HERE ARE THE FACTS
As of today September 28th 2008 please link to Hong Kong Environmental Protection
Agency.
http://www.epd-asg.gov.hk/eindex.php figure
Notice that in 10 out of 14 districts the highest industrial pollutants are Respirable Suspended Particulates. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT’S DANGEROUS AND WHAT A HEPA AIR PURIFIER REMOVES FROM THE AIR YOU’RE BREATHING
Definition:
*RSP are the proportion of total suspended particulates of a size smaller than 10 micrometres and they have the ability to penetrate deeply into the lungs. Depending on their source and the existing meteorological conditions, RSP can be made up of a number of different constituents.
A QUALITY AIR PURIFIER WITH A TRUE HEPA MEDIA FILTER WILL REMOVE ALL PARTICLES LARGER THAN 0.3 MICRONS WHICH VIRTUALY COMPLETELY SOLVES THE PROBLEM WITH HONG KONGS HIGHEST POLLUTANT

I would suggest putting one in the rooms you use the most. Especially your bedroom and childrens bedroom because in reality this is where you spend a 1/3 or your day.
If your finances permit one for the living room as well and if your on a tighter budget you may always move one from the bedroom into the living room when you have guests over.

Posted by alcheng (424 days ago)
Hi, it's good to see that your company is using one of the logo designs I chose!
I do have a concern about the HEPA filter though, I used to have a Class 10,000 cleanroom production facility using positive pressure and multiple 99.99% HEPA filters throughout for the a/c ventilation, these filters are first and foremost VERY EXPENSIVE (~$3000/each) and they require separate fans above it to "blow" the cool filtered air through which makes lots of noise. You state that your units are max. 60 decibels, which should be fine considering HK's quite noisy environment.
My concern is with so much dust and whatever else in the air, how can your HEPA filter last 6-9 months continuous use? Inside a "normal" household, you would normally open windows to ventilate it (in turn letting dust and other particles inside the home); have clothing, furniture, drapes, etc. which also contribute to even more dust/particles inside the home; and many other dust/particles contributing factors. That would lead to the HEPA filter getting clogged within say 3-4 months.
Effectively, only some of this dust inside the home will get filtered through the unit, and the rest will either be on the floor, furniture, etc. I can't see how a little machine, or even multiple units, will be able to move most of the air inside a room into the unit to be filtered by the HEPA filter. Sorry about my pessimism. But I do applaud your unit for including UV light as a "secondary filter".

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (424 days ago)
Alcheng – before I was involved in the business I asked myself the same question
This is the exact reason we don't recommend using expensive air purifiers which state they can clean an entire house up to 1200 sqft. Logic would suggests its impossible for one unit to clear an entire house because -the airborne particles in your bedroom will not line up single file, out your door through the corridor, past the kitchen into the machine sitting in the corner of the living room.
The reason why we chose this brand of air purifiers is because through independent testing they have out performed the most expensive brands but are less than half the price. Example: By placing one in your bedroom and your daughter’s bedroom you can rest assured that these two rooms will be cleaned airborne particles than by just having one big unit sitting in your living room giving out noise pollution trying to do the whole house.
To answer your main question about being a little pessimist about the 6 - 9 month statement - You are totally correct – the filter will not last 6-9 months if you place it in a barn or home that is severely contaminated by dust musts or other particles. These statistics were taken from testing the units on the average American home. Due to the heavy Hong Kong pollution this could possibly reduce the life of the filter by a month but fortunately filter replacements are only $480 HKD which is far less t than $3000 that you were paying before.

Posted by Fieter (422 days ago)
What is the actual capacity of the filter - ie how many lbs of dust can it absorb? How does it decide it is 'full' and needs to be replaced?
Average human loses 3 lbs of skin flakes a year on his bed. Which then feeds the dust mites. Then there is the dog and all the other pollution coming from outside. Can these filters really absorb that much?
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (422 days ago)
Dear Fieter,
I appreciate your concern with dust mites and the dangers they pose in a home. This is why using a hepa filter is necessary because it can eliminate 99% of the dust mites in its area. The length of time your able to use the filter is determined by its size and the dimensions we are using will be effective for 6-9 months. A sensor will alert you when the filter is ready to be changed.
If you would like more information on dust mites/dead skin please read the fact sheet from Ohio State University
http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2157.html

Posted by alcheng (422 days ago)
Fieter, that's exactly what I was concerned about too. The only way I see it "automatically sense" the filter is full/clogged is either by an electronic timer type system wherein it just "guesstimates" the number of hours the unit has been turned on and is preprogrammed to tell you to change the filter, or by an actual sensor connected to the fan to sense the airflow (if it's being restricted by the filter). Taking the second method into account, the HEPA filter should be properly sealed to the unit somehow (by mechanical means with a sealing gasket) so that the air it is filtering is only going through the filter and not leaking elsewhere.
In my cleanroom's setup, we had an airpressure sensor to actually see the amount of air being pushed around (like a pressurized room) inside the cleanroom. This can only be done through positive pressure. Once the airpressure drops, you know that the filters are getting clogged (not enough airflow through the HEPA filters) and need replacement soon.
Additionally, taking account the polluted air we have in HK, have you ever noticed how much dust still settles on your floor, even right after you have vacuumed AND mopped daily? I just don't see how it can filter 99% of the air inside a room, even with multiple units. There's just dust everywhere - on your furniture, curtains, beds, on yourself, etc.

The only way to truly know the efficiency of an air purifier you would need to purchase a high grade laser particle counter with a price tag of $5000 USD.
Alen Corporation has already independently tested the Paralda - It would simply be false advertising if we were stating these facts and it wasn't true.

"The only way to truly know the efficiency of an air purifier you would need to purchase a high grade laser particle counter with a price tag of $5000 USD."
True, but any decent sized HVAC company in HK would have equipment like this as well. What most of us are concerned about is the efficiency of the entire unit, and not just your company's. For anyone to claim their unit can clean 99% of the air in the specified area is just stretching it, no? Plus, you really didn't answer our questions yet.
Posted by fushingbayloo (399 days ago)
What about the Oxyvital product? http://www.oxyvital.com/index.html
Their product claims to get rid of all pollutants, bacterias and gases. The gases are the big draw to their product. They claim "to begin where the other products end" their cleaning with special carbon filters.
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (399 days ago)
Unfortunately I have researched all the quality brands before choosing Alen and have never heard of them.
1. Seems like a local company (not saying that is bad but probably has a ways to go in research and development)
2. Did a search and they have never been independently compared and tested to other brands.
3. From what i gather they don't use a Hepa filter which is the most expensive part of the unit but gives the user the absolute most benefits. If you do a search on the top air purifiers in the world like Alen you will see that a true Hepa filter is the most important aspect in any air purification system.

Posted by DaHKGKid (395 days ago)
Okay, we have been using the new ALEN Paralda air cleaner for 3 weeks now. My wife who has been suffering for some time from both allergies and a low tolerance to the pollution in HK has shown very good improvement while in our house.
In comparison with our previous SHARP Plasmacluster, which seemed to help marginally, this one gets the job done.
As instructed by Renaudlifestyle, we made sure the UV filter was on full time and running on the 2nd speed level full time. It is a very quiet machine and easy to setup and operate. It is a tower shape with a small footprint that is easily placed in any room. We use it in our bedroom and now thinking of buying another for our living room.
While HK does have significant levels of pollution, the inside of your home while thinking is a safe haven actually maybe worse as your aircons are drawing in polluted air and other particles and your home traps them.
I would have to say that even if you dont have an obvious problem that doesnt mean you wont in the future so worth the purchase given the reward of breathing clean air especially during the night time.
Great Product 10/10!

Can you compare the Blueair filters to yours? They claim the Blueair Medical VOC Multigas can remove objscts as small as 0.1 microns. The use carbon and are apparently very good with smoke and VOC's . They are more expensive than the Paralda - I am trying to figure if that is justified.

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (390 days ago)
Fieter,
If you are concerned about VOC's. I would strongly consider using our A375UV Multi Gas Hepa Air Purifier. (also uses carbon activated pellets to absorb VOC's)
Probably the most reliable site that takes independent testing seriously is Air Purifiers America and you may find some great unbiased brand comparisons.
http://www.air-purifiers-america.com/comparison.asp?tag=CHEMICAL&linkid=leftMenu
The A375UV in consistantly rated number 1 or 2 in VOC removal and our prices in Hong Kong are even more affordable then in America. The A375UV is definetely superior to the Blueair in removing VOC's'.
http://www.alencorpasia.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=A375UV
To be fair I should mention that the Blueair removed the same amount of particles as the A375UV during independent tests. (which is very good). The Paralda has not been independently tested by the site yet but since it uses the same technology we expect it to test virtually the same.
http://www.air-purifiers-america.com/ed_APA_test_results.asp?linkid=leftMenu
The A375UV is cheaper so your getting much better overall value and protection by choosing the Alen A375UV. In the end its not a very difficult decision.

I have heard that the Rex Air is a good vacuum cleaner but over priced.
There are a few pieces of information that are especially important to know about water vacuum cleaners. For one, they use water to trap the dust particles rather than ordinary filters, and this not only improves the quality of air that is coming back out of the vacuum, but as well you can literally see the water getting dirtier as you vacuum, and this can help you to keep track of where the dirtiest places are in your home.

These air purifiers are absolutely excellent. I did my research and finally took the plunge by purchasing 3 units for my home and they do exactly as advertised. Nice crisp, fresh air in the morning and my sons cough disappeared after a week. I have purchased units from fortress before and these Alen units clearly perform much much better. Took me a few minutes to understand the the touch screen but its all good now.
Thanks for the thread Ed....this is product that actually makes a difference without the hefty price tag.

I was persuaded by a friend to buy Lampe Berger before but I found them more to be a gimmick than anything else. Certainly not useful in anyway in terms of purifying the air or boosting anyone's respiratory health!
On the other hand, I recently bought a Paralda for our baby's room and it did clear up my baby's nagging cough. Also his room feels a lot fresher in general. Highly highly recommended.

Can Renaud please comment on the AAF (American Air Filter) HEPA Air Purifer (200 & 400)? I can't find these products listed in any of the product reviews. From the brochure I have they seem to offer comparable performance.
Tks.
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (234 days ago)
Hi Pachita,
I would like to be able to help you out but unfortunately there is very little information available anywhere about this brand. Most air purification companies will state the same information in the brochure but the major difference comes down to the actual performance under normal living conditions.
I would only trust air purifiers that have been tested with a laser particle counter through an independent source because its simply too easy to state fancy facts in a marketing brochure.
We did research the top 10 brands on the market before deciding on which brand to distribute and we felt that Alen air purifiers were by far the best combination of performance and affordability for office or residential use.
If you have any further questions feel free to let me know.

Have you had any comments from customers that the air purifier cases the air to be dry?
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (193 days ago)
HADDIN
You must be thinking of UV rays from the sun? UV lights in air purifiers are effective 4 to 5 inches from the source which is the UV bulb. The Hepa filter is what catches the airborne particles, bacteria and viruses. The UV light then shines on to the filter from 1.5 inches away and eliminates bacteria or viruses that were caught in the filter.
BBR
No never had any comments about dry air. I believe that this would be technically impossible since there is no way for an air purifier to suck up the humidity. Hope you have not been living in Hong Kong too long and are now having side effects from clean air. :)
Posted by Ed (192 days ago)
Considering how humid it is in HK, dry air would be a welcome effect of using one of these heheh....

I am currently using Alen right now and have used IQ before in the states. Yes, I have an IQ Air as well - is there any difference (apart from the price)?

Posted by axptguy38 (180 days ago)
"And I suppose our windows should be kept mainly closed, opened for a couple of hours a day, is that right?"
If you open the windows you're "cleaning" the outside air as well. There's no way your purifier can keep up.

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (180 days ago)
Of course it is recommended to keep the windows shut but we are all human and love the feel of outdoor air once in awhile. I personally feel this is more about prevention then trying to make our home a hospital room so even I occasionally open the windows at home for a short period of time. Axptguy38 is right that the filter will be working overtime if you do open the windows.
The U.S manufacture states that the filter needs to be changed every 6 to 9 months but we are finding that that in Hong Kong under normal use the filter needs changing every 6 months due to much higher pollution levels. If you run any air purifier with the windows open it will significantly reduce the life of the filter. Your indoor/outdoor environment will also impact the life of the filter ex: construction near by, poorly constructed buildings etc...
The filter replacement cost for the Paralda is 480HKD and the A375UV is 580HKD.
By the way we are currently setting up our new Alen site that also has additional useful info & videos.

I recently went to an Ear Nose & Throat specialist because of constant nose bleeds. I expected him to tell me that the rotten Hong Kong air was causing the nose bleeds but to my surprise he diagnosed the problem as being caused by narrow air passages in my nose and the dry air in the apartment.
I asked if I should buy an air pureifier and again to my surprise was told it was the worst thing I could do as the purifier takes moisture out of the air! He recommended buying a humidifier and putting it on my side of the bed at night.
After doing this for a month the nose bleeds have stopped (keep the humidifier on every night).
So......do the air purifiers take the moisture out of the air or not?? Perhaps you can answer this Renaudlifestyle??
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (180 days ago)
HI Ceeh,
My answer to your question is that it is absolutely 100% impossible for an air purifier to take moisture out of the air.
Your doctor could be thinking of an of air conditioner? The technology of an air conditioner is such that it cools the air by taking moisture out. (This is why you can often see water dripping from an air conditioner). You will never see water around an air purifier and the moisture needs to go somewhere to be effectively removed.
I am not expert on air conditioners but i know its a fairly common for certain people to have nose bleeds or dry nasal passages if they sleep with it on.
Just think of an air purifier as a reversed fan that sucks air in through a filter to be blown out clean through the other side. There is no system to remove moisture or the hepa filter would be wet thus making it ineffective.

Hi,
Thanks for all the clear and researched information above. Having a baby soon, so considering an air purifier. Some questions.
- Does the simultaneous use of dehumidifier affect the efficiency of the air purifier (although sounds ridiculous that I need an air con, air dehumidifier and air purifier)
- Should I also be getting a special water vapour hoover, or is that just overdoing it if I get air purifier as this would get rid of any residual particles from normal hoover.
- If I understand above correctly, it will also get rid of some of the polutants in HK from soot, car pollution, etc?
- I have visited your website, and see that the only difference between Paralda and A375UV is the PCO system. Can you pls help explain your views on when I should choose one vs the other? I guess design is the other reason, as they are about the same size in terms of volume, right?
- What is the delivery time for each of these?

Hi Renaud
I understand how it seems physically impossible for the air purifier to remove moisture, but I have a situation in HK where it is the air purifier that is 'causing' the dry air. We have through process of elimination with the A/C's off and no purifier on, then the purifier on and the air is noticeably drier feeling.
In my un-scientific google research on this issue I have found a posting where a voice coach has advised a student not to use an air purifier due to the dry air it can cause.
I know it sounds illogical, but there is something happening.
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (170 days ago)
Hi Bbr,
I do appreciate your concern with dry air but I will stick with the statement that it is 100% impossible for the air purifier to cause dry air. It is only fair to the AX readers that you come up with research/facts stating otherwise or this forum post will simply be a rumor mill without any scientific backing. I have done my research and I am throwing a challenge out to you to prove otherwise.
If you are able to find any information we will be the first to back your claim because considering the high humidity levels in HK it would make Alen air purifiers much more attractive to the HK market.
Don't take this the wrong way but until someone comes up with facts lets please squash this topic and consider it case closed.

Not to sounds like a shell, but I agree with Renaudlifestyle. Air purifiers do not dry out the air.

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (170 days ago)
Hi Rayo,
Dehumidifiers don't affect the efficiency of an air purifier and I dont think the use of a "water vacuum cleaner is necessary if your running an air purifer but it wouldn't hurt. .
The way I look at it is you putting your mouth on the floor to breathe it could be quite useful Joking a side scientific research does show that a water vacuum cleaner can be useful for certain particles that do drop to the floor and is much more efficient than a regular vacuum cleaner. I would also prefer not to elaborate further because I have not done enough research on it to give valuable input to the thread.
Here is the difference between the A375UV and Paralda.
http://www.alencorpasia.com/air-purifiers.shtml
The other main difference found in the product description is the Paralda cleans up to 400 sqf and the A375UV up to 800 sqf.
My personal recommendation would be the Paralda for bedrooms because its a quieter unit and you can sleep comfortably with it on the 2nd speed. (it has 4)
The A375UV has a more powerful fan which means a little noisier. i personally put the A375UV in the larger living area and hallway because it can clean out a large area in no time.
Hope this helps.

I have a concern mainly with VOCs as I will be moving into a newly renovated apartment soon. So I need to buy two or three more air purifiers (BTW can I get a bigger discount if I order more than one purifier) I read carbon based filters (which I belive are in the Alen purifiers) can remove VOCs so do these gas particles just get trapped inside the carbon filter or is there a chemical reaction that will make the gases less hazardous. If they are just trapped inside how is that cleaned. Currently I have two sharp air purifiers and one of them I can wash the carbon filter whereas one cannot. I am just curious what happens to the VOCs.

Posted by DaHKGKid (166 days ago)
May I submit that having both a Sharp Plasmacluster and the new Alen Paralda, the Paralda wins hands down after using it for the last ten months. For my use it was like night and day and within 3-5 days was noticeable to my wife who suffers badly from pollution, minor allergies and any dampness.
Even for myself, I find having the Paralda in our master bedroom has taken away the dry throat I used to have in the mornings. Not to mention my children have found the same.
While I do agree with the benefit of having a removable, washable filter in the Sharp, it is my belief that it is one of the shortcomings to the ultimate performance of this unit on top of just not getting the job done like the Paralda.
I am definitely going to purchase a few more for the bedrooms and an A375UV for my large living room.
I personally cannot stress enough how important it is for us to breath the cleanest air possible. In Hong Kong, we are all challenged by both pollution and hiding in our homes which only traps bad air and recirculates it!
Having an air cleaner in your home should be considered a must have! Again, even those who do not suffer in an obvious way I believe are just kidding themselves and over time will suffer the same effects.

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (166 days ago)
You are 100% correct the A375UV does have carbon activated pellets and carbon does absorb VOC gases. The problem is that certain people do not dispose of the filters in a timely fashion so these gases can be re-released after a certain period of time if you leave old filters laying around the house. This is another reason why its important to change the filters in your air purifiers. Alen did realize this while they were designing the A375UV so they added a little known feature called Photo-Catalytic Oxidation which converts the gases into harmless elements.
A large contributing factor to poor indoor air quality is the release of VOC’s. VOC’s are organic (carbon based) and are emitted as gases from a variety of products. Also called hydrocarbons, VOC’s vaporize due to sufficiently high vapor pressures.
The common indoor sources of VOC’s are paint, carpeting, copiers/printers, laminated furniture, wood preservatives, paint thinner, glues, permanent markers, cosmetics and certain aerosols and plastics. If there is not sufficient ventilation with the outdoor air and VOC’s are present, the indoor pollution levels can be up to 10 times higher than the outdoor air according to the EPA. And that includes urban area
The A375UV includes UV-PCO (UV Photo Catalytic Oxidation) technology to reduce the levels of VOC’s. The interaction of UV-C light and a permanent titanium dioxide (TiO2) grid serves as a photocatalyst to carry out hydrolysis (ie. to break water into hydrogen and oxygen). As TiO2 is exposed to UV light, it becomes increasingly hydrophilic; thus, it can be used reduce concentrations of airborne pollutants such as volatile organic compounds into harmless elements.
To answer you question about discounts on multiple units yes we do have promotions. Occasionally its in the form of a free filter or a percentage off your total order. Feel free to contact me any time and let me know that we chatted via AX and it will be my pleasure to sort you out or answer your questions in more detail over the phone.

With all the talk about the swine flu shutting down schools all over town I was wondering if air purifiers can reduce the chance of catching it??
Posted by DaHKGKid (155 days ago)
I believe any opportunity to better your health is key. If you breath clean air, it will only better your immune system thus bettering your chances. This is just common sense to most but easy to do means easy not to do!
You insure yourself, your car and occupants, why not your family further with such a device. This is my reasoning for owning a few.
Oh yeah, why not buy the best!

"With all the talk about the swine flu shutting down schools all over town I was wondering if air purifiers can reduce the chance of catching it??"
In theory, perhaps by an infinitesimal amount. But in reality you are unlikely to catch it in the house unless someone else is already infected. You'll get it while out and about.
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (130 days ago)
Actually the UV light in Alen air purifiers can eliminate the swine flu virus. The virus would need to go through the unit and come within 3 to 4 inches of the UV light.

We bought the Paralda back in January. our 3yr old had a permanent cough which only cleared up on vacations, after our xmas break his cough returned yet again. we'd always promised that if the air affected his health we'd leave Hong Kong. but after a bit of googling decided to buy this filter as a last ditch solution. i can honestly say the difference is day and night. he's had one cough since, which i would say is more than fine as kids pick up loads of bugs from each other. i wish i'd done it 3 yrs ago! We are currently trying to research which pollutant causes this disturbing cough. From our experience its usually in children under 10 years old and the highest percentage would be under 5 because there lungs are still developing at that age.

I'm shopping for an air purifier too and have a few questions:
1) Is Alen Corp affiliated with HKXPAT? I noticed you both have the same address at 5/F Yat Fat Building on Des Voeux Rd in Hong Kong.
2) When you say you're "America's # 1 Air Purifier..." What exactly do you mean? Number one is sales? Number one in ratings? Number one in customer satisfaction? Do you information to support this claim?
Please respond. Thanks...I just want to be sure for the sake of comparison. Your products are more expensive than those Whirlpool & Sharp brands at Fortress. Frankly, I've live in the US for 20+ years and have never heard of Alen Corp...
Any information will be very helpful.

Alen is a US company - their China distributor is in Shanghai - they use our office as a mailing address for Hong Kong.
I will leave the people from Alen to respond to the rest of your questions

Hi Darleen,
Very valid question and if we can simply place more info on a banner it could be explained. Alen is the #1 air purifier in performance and affordability - yes they do have supporting testing and reports to validate the claims. If your looking for percentage of market share other brands would definitely be rated higher but we base ours on performance.
I believe in the past we have posted quite a few links pointing to sites that can also validate this position.
- Considered #1 Best Value Air Purifier on the Market
- Voted top Air Purification brand by the only retailer that actually tests the units they sell with a laser particle counter.
For the sake of comparison and performance these 2 links are where you want to start.

We do keep air purifiers on display at the office in Central on Des Voeux Road for AX members to come and see the units in action.
I would also like to thank AsiaXpat for providing such a great platform which allows us to truly have a hands on approach in communicating with members like yourself.

I would agree completely with the above. #1 overall in performance, price and quality!
I have to be honest, I got sucked in by the marketing on the SHARP Plasma-cluster along with some reviews but all were based on price. I went down the track of the IQ AIR based on what I feel was an over rotation to get something that could not be disputed but price was beyond acceptable.
Going back to the SHARP models, there was NO WAY of guaranteeing if the product actually worked unless you had high end testing equipment and do a before after test.
I was absolutely stuck!
The proof therefore was very simple! When I ran the Alen Paralda there was a noticeable and REAL difference in our health, especially my wife's, who is suffering after a 6 year stay in HK. Dry throat, running nose, cough, all gone in only 3 days.
Further, I am now running Paralda in all of my bedrooms and run a model A375 Multi Gas in my living room which is absolutely excellent.
Again, while stating the obvious that you cannot put a price on you and your families health, may I submit that Alen has designed Air Purifiers which DELIVER what is advertised at a price most affordable!
One small note, the Alen Paralda is the only Energy Star Qualified unit I have seen on the market today. The difference in the premium (which again is not anywhere near what you would think), will pay for itself and one big issue that everyone does not account for is noise. The Paralda is so quiet, you wont even know its on.
I hope this helps everyone with their decision as it took over 2 years and making the wrong decisions to bring me to these conclusions.

I would like Alen air to answer the following question:
I understand that Allen filters compare very well with more expansive IQAir machines. These are American tests that look at dust and pollen - much bigger particles than the carbon based pollution we try to filter out in HKG.
However IQAir states that their machines filter down to 0.003 Microns. This is very important due to the fact that pollution in HKG ( carbon based exhaust emssions etc) is generally of a particle size of 0.01 micron or smaller. Tha average HEPA filter does 0.3 microns - which is fine for pollen and dust but not good enough for HKG pollution.
Renaudlifestyle has claimed in an earlier post that HKG pollution is 0.3 microns or bigger. I do not believe this is correct. There is a lot of evidence that particularly diesel exhaust is very carcinogenic and comes in particle size down to 0.008 micron or less
Does Alen filters filter down to 0.00x micron and smaller like IQ air???? Nowhere in their marketing do they refer to this - which makes me wonder.....

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (61 days ago)
Hi Fieter,
It would be my pleasure to respond to your email in greater detail tomorrow morning and as a father myself appreciate you concern with the above pollutants.
Could you please tell me where we stated that HK pollution is O.3 microns or bigger?

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (61 days ago)
I think most people need to realize that a good air purifier not only has HEPA but other technologies to remove various pollutants. What really sets Alen apart is we offer a multi-filtration technology I think this will answer most of your questions.
The Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department states that the most of the pollutants are 10 microns or smaller = 10 microns. Not 0.0000xxx. Also note that even in other air purifiers its not the HEPA filter that removes gases from our home but the other little known technologies that are incorporated in to a high performance air purifier like IQ or Alen and this is why different models / options are offered.
http://www.epd-asg.gov.hk/english/backgd/rsp.php
Alen filtration technologies can be turned on or off depending on what you're trying to achieve.
1ST TECHNOLOGY
Photo-Catalytic Oxidation
Our A375UV is best in class and only air purifier out there that can permanently remove a wide range of gases, volatile organic compounds, smoke, ammonia, etc.. Other gas air purifiers typically use carbon, which can be a problem because carbon stores gases which can be released at a later whereas our solution permanently eliminates the gas/odor on contact. Exclusive targeted technology was developed to address specific indoor air pollutants by PhD chemists and patented.
The A375UV includes UV-PCO(UV Photo Catalytic Oxidation) technology to reduce the levels of VOC's. The interaction of UV-C light and a permanent titanium dioxide (TiO2) grid serves as a photocatalyst to carry out hydrolysis (ie.to break water into hydrogen and oxygen). As TiO2 is exposed to UV light, it becomes increasingly hydrophilic; thus, it can be used reduce concentrations of airborne pollutants such as volatile organic compounds into harmless elements. Ya, we pack a lot of technology into our little air purifiers! As a safety feature, the UV-C lights and titanium dioxide grid are located on the inner most section of the A375UV.
SECOND TECHNOLOGY
UV Light (ultraviolet)
Our UV air purifiers have been tested to eliminate over 96%,
Ultraviolet light kills microorganisms by damaging the DNA. UV radiation disrupts the chemical bonds that hold the atoms of DNA together in the microorganism. If enough of these defects accumulate on a microorganism's DNA its replication is inhibited, thereby rendering it harmless. If the damage is severe enough, the bacteria cannot repair the damage and will die.
Bacteria are single cell microorganisms that exist everywhere. They are often 0.2 to 5 microns in diameter and most do not create an issue for people. But the ones that can present problems are pretty bad problems:
* Staphylococcus aureus are bacteria known to cause "staph" infections.
* Klebsiella pneumonia is a bacteria that can cause pneumonia.
* E Coli is a bacteria that is often associated with food poisoning but it also exists in the air and can affect the respiratory system.
3RD TECHNOLOGY
NEW Silver Ion HEPA Filtration (Silver has been around for thousands of year and hopefully one of the answers to reduce swine flu)
The new Silver Ion HEPA filter eliminates up to 99% of bacteria, up to 50% of viruses that cause influenza and 99% of airborne allergens. The Silver Ion HEPA filter is coated with Silver Ion, which is antimicrobial. This keeps germs from developing inside the unit and prevents bacteria from being blown into the air. Silver Ion coatings greatly reduce the presence of fungi and bacteria within five minutes of operation. Through a process of denaturation and oxidation, the structure of the enzyme that produces oxygen gets detached and silver ion particles produce reactive oxygen in the air which works to destroy over 650 types of bacteria. Toxic to viruses and bacteria, silver ion is harmless to humans.
4TH TECHNOLOGY
True Hepa
This is the same filter technology as recommended by the US Department of Homeland Security to remove harmful airborne particles in a terrorist threat. Tested at over 1,000% better than the leading ionic air purifier and up to 50% better than leading HEPA type air purifiers by the world's leading independent test.
We have more developments on the way but this should do for now. Thanks for you're question.

It's not the pollen that is the issue!

Thanks for the comment and I am sure glad you weren't my doctor when my son was born and had a lingering cough that if not had cleared up due to external help it could of lead to a chronic medical condition and who knows what else.

Feel free to come by our office anytime and it would be my pleasure to talk with you about the hundreds of cases that where an Alen air purifier has made a significant difference in peoples lives.

i wonder how effective (or not) air purifiers would be in a red dust storm that Australia is experiencing now

Posted by Wiz Bang (59 days ago)
so is that a yes or a no - not effective?
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (58 days ago)
Yes, the air purifier would be effective in removing dust during this type of storm. Although I should say that the filter life would be drastically reduced due too much higher concentrations.

PizzaAce, now that you have been thawed out after being frozen in time, check to see how fresh your cave air is in HK.
My view is simple, while at some point in time (recently in the last 20 years I believe), we outgrew the world and no longer can adapt to the changes to stay healthy. We need assistance in key areas, Air Purification is not unlike Water Purification. We need constant supply of both everyday.
On a more factual note, try googling 'deaths due to air pollution asia' and see what comes up! #1 is the following, there are thousands of factual reports available to you, please educate yourself!

On a stinky note we are pleased to announce that we have finally shipped Alen's patented odor spray from the U.S
We've smelt all that mysterious stench coming from the backseat - not sure it is a forgotten milk container or your gym bag, but whatever it is, it's revolting. A few squirts and those little stinky molecules are gone and your car is smelling good enough to valet again.
The chemists that engineered this spray had no concept that cars could stink, til they carpooled with one of the sales guys. Their findings are what sets Odor4 apart from other odor removal products — its patented process. Odors are attacked in two ways. First, at the molecular level we neutralize the odor by converting it into an odorless particle. Second, through encapsulation the odor is surrounded and sealed off. This means that nearly instantly the odor is gone forever and you are left with a fresh scent.
This formulation has been used by the pros in hotels, car rental agencies and car dealerships to remove odors from fabrics, carpeting and upholstery; the very things that hold in odors and we are now making it available for in-home use.

I am interested to buy, but was wondering whether we need to close the windows when the Alen air filter is running?

Posted by Renaudlifestyle (14 days ago)
HI Tickles,
Its is recommended to keep the windows closed most of the time because the second you open the windows is when airborne particles enter your home. Indoor air pollotion can be 7-10 times worst than outdoor pollution.
Although if you just painted your home VOC gas' would be a concern so I would suggest opening your windows far a period of time and also running our A375UV multi-gas air purifier once you decide to spend extended periods ot time in those rooms.
On a personal note I feel there is nothing wrong with opening the windows and letting our home air out once in awhile. Once you turn the air purifiers on full speed you will achieve apprx 4 air changes per hour within its recommended square footage so the particles let in would be filtered quickly.
The one disadvantage of running your air purifier with the windows open is that you would need to replace your filters more often so I suggest turning off the units when plan on opening the windows.

HI Peng Hong 647,
As someone in a previous post said our bodies have been adjusting to certain natural contaminants for 1000's of years but our bodies aren't built to adjust to the industrial pollution ex: Suspended coal particulate being blown over from the 200,000 + factories accross the border.

Do you keep your purifier on the entire day or only when you are in the room?
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (14 days ago)
In Hong Kong I keep the air purifiers on the entire day where my children spend the most time because obviously they are my biggest concern when living in this type of environment. I do have friends without children and they only turn them on when they get home and still feel a noticeable difference.
The units have 4 speeds so I also suggest adjusting them to a lower speed when your at work - higher speed to clean the house when you arrive and then to the 2nd speed during sleeping hours.
The units are built to run 24/7 and they are also Energy Star Qualified which means they run on pennies a day.
-Existing medical conditions like allergies, asthma, etc: All Day
-You have children: All Day
-Healthy person just concerned about pollutants: All day or just when your at home
-Office space: All day but adjust to a lower speed after hours.
I am off to my sons Kindergarten class right now but will be available for further questions this afternoon.

I have Paralda's in each of our bedrooms that are always used (3) one Paralda in my home office and one A375UV's in each of my living areas. That's 6 units in total as I have a quite a large home.
During the hot summer days or anytime I feel the pollution is worse than normal my windows especially in the bedrooms and my home office are closed and A/C on low so I will have each of my AP's running on low as well.
For rooms which receive outdoor air during the day or during the fall-winter-spring months when temps are tollerable, I only run the AP's when we as a family are home and before dinner clear both the family room and dining room with my 375's, takes 30 mins on auto setting. While having dinner, my bedrooms are being purified until we go to bed on speed 2-3 and during the night on speed 1.
If for any reason the children are at home playing we will simply set the AP's on in rooms which they are using. We have been using the Paralda since it was released in HK and have since fit up the whole house and have never looked back.
In essense we have set our own in-house CLEAN AIR POLICY. It is now a ritual and not only has it made a big difference to our family, but even friends who spend 2-3 hours at our home have commented on it.
My wifes dry throat, coughing and nasal problems have gone. My 8 year old who has been in HK for 6 years who was finally showing signs of the same is now not suffering, preventatively it was easy to do the rest of the house.
We pay big bucks for clean water, we pay the same for high quality food, why would we deny ourselves of clean air!!!

I read on the www.air-purifiers-america.com website that many customers complained about the UV lights failing within weeks or months of purchase. Is this UV light issue covered by the lifetime warranty?
furthermore - is the silver HEPA filter (marketet as an add-on Flu Prevention Filter in the US) available in HK, too?
Posted by Renaudlifestyle (12 days ago)
Hi flyboy,
Yes, everything is covered by the lifetime warranty and the Silver Hepa filter for flu prevention is available in Hong Kong. Alen did have issues with a small number of 1st generation units in the U.S late 2008 / early 2009. Alen is already on the 3rd generation of Paralda's and everything is in tip top shape backed by a lifetime warranty and a 30 day return policy.
Lets also not forget that the only website that tests units with a laser particle counter has given Alen a #1 rating over its premium priced competitors and also has the highest 5 star customer feedback out of all the brands they carry.

Even though I really dislike the way AsiaXpat deals with questions that are considered unfavourable to their advertiser Alen/Renaud (I got posts deleted and threats of account suspension), I will give credit to the Alen Product when it's due - and here credit certainly IS due:
yesterday, far away from city smog on Lantau Island:
outdoors: 230,000 particles per litre of air (p/l) (and that was a "clear air" day, a bad day sees a million and more)
indoors: approx. 160,000 p/l
in a room with an Alen Paralda, speed 3 for 1 hour before the test: 10,000 to 11,000 p/l
directly at the air outlet of the Alen Paralda: 800-1,400 p/l
(particle size measured > 0.3 micron)
to give these values some meaning: more than 105,000 p/l are considered a health risk by the W.H.O., anything below 60,000 p/l is considered good air quality, high up in the Swiss Alps you will find 2,000 p/l ...
The Paralda did remove up to 99,5% of the particles, and reduced the room particle load by 93% within 1 hour. (120 sq/ft room)
The only downside is: it's quite noisy! But if you run it for 1-2h before going to bed on high and on 1 whilst sleeping it's no problem at all.
So - the verdict is: Alen's Paralda does what it says on the tin.
Very good filtration at an exceptionally good price.
If you want more protection (including particles below 0.3 micron) you'll have to fork out 3-4 times the money for an IQ-Air.

flyboyHK, great post! Which Particle Counter are you using? I have noticed a considerable difference in my home since adding both Paralda's and A375UV's from ALEN but would like to quantify the benefits such as you.
