Any 2nd Hand Camera Lens Shop
Posted by Singh is King (140 days ago)
Hi,
I am looking at buying a pre-owned Nikkon 18mm-200mm lens for my DSLR camera. Are there any reliable shops that sell 2nd hand camera lenses ?
Grateful for all prompt replies.

Try Mirama Camera on 25 Stanley Street. They normally have a good selection.

thanks axptguy , stanley street has been recommended to me by others as well, will definitely look them up. I am a bit surprised that despite such a vibrant camera market, HK has very few choices on lens exchange :(

I hear you. As I have noted before on these forums, HK looks like a great place to shop but is in many ways quite mainstream. Obscure items are often tricky or impossible to locate.
Also, and I am generalizing, but my impression is that locals typically want to buy new when it comes to luxury items. Certainly the car market is like that. Locals buy all the new BMW and Mercedes. Expats pick them up second hand.

Hing Lee (i think that is the name) on Lyndhurst Terrace, just under the escalator. Good people. Mostly Canon stuff perhaps, but he might be able to help.

Ask these guys Photo Scientific Appliances Ltd.; 6 Stanley St., Central, Hong Kong; tel: 2522 0871

thanks Ed & Rasbro. I called Photo Scientific Appliances and they sell only brand new lenses.
Axptguy - couldnt agree with you more. People in HK def like to purchase new luxury items ; I get such amusing responses from camera shops when i inquire about a second hand nikon lens :)

You can also check out the second hand lenses at Dragon Centre in Sham Shui Po. I saw a lot of 2nd hand lenses near one of the Nikon dealers there. Don't know about quality though.

Punter - great, that Sham Shui Po's Dragon Centre sounds like a good place to check these out !

The usual expat goes to expensive expat-oriented shop and assumes everyone in HK only buys luxury goods story :)
Actually there are many places to buy second-hand gear and many HK people do:
For lenses, there is a whole mall of second-hand camera and lens shops in Champagne Court in Tsim Sha Tsui (not far from Knutsford Terrace) as well as others dotted around TST.
Sham Shui Po , of course, has all kinds of second-hand gear, particularly electrical and camera.
Most computer malls have a couple of second-hand camera shops, which usually have a few lenses.
Online, go to http://www.dcfever.com/

Dipper - as an aside I would not classify the 18-200 as a luxury item. To OP, your best bet is to post a WANTED post in review33.com Someone is offering to sell their 18-200 along with DSLR. Maybe you can ask if they will sell separately. Get a Chinese colleague to help you as this site is mainly Chinese.

I wasn't suggesting that the lens was a luxury item, I was referring to the posted suggestion that nobody in HK buys second-hand and that HK people only purchase new, luxury items.

dipper, I'm glad to be proven wrong on that one! ;)

I checked out dcfever.com and located more than 20 listings of 18mm-200mm, thats amazing, it's in cantonese so had to have my assistant work on a user ID

Glad it seems to have worked out for you SIK, I guess you should be able to find one amongst the twenty :) In my experience, with online trading in HK you normally make sure the basics of the deal work out between you online (price, condition of lense etc.) and then arrange to meet at a mutually convenient MTR station to check the goods, conclude the deal, handover the cash etc.

We've been to the place Dipper mentions for camera repairs. Its on Kimberley Rd, opposite side of the rd to Knutsford terrace, but slightly further down towards the junction of Nathan rd. They do have lots of second hand lenses

Lots of nikonians here, anyone know what the market is like for Pentax gear? Love to find a 50mm f1.4 or f1.7. Maybe even a good macro lens.
Posted by dipper (137 days ago)
Actually all the above info is not particularly related to Nikon gear, most of the places mentioned will sell any brand, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Minolta, Leica, Hasselblad etc.

I am looking for a Minolta f4 600 and Minolta TC's
any ideas which shops could possibly have this?
Any other lists other than dcfever.com (something in English) I dont have help in cantonese

For Minolta and Pentax stuff, DCFever.com as posted above is still your best bet, though stuff like a 50mm F1.4 comes along rarely.
I bought my 50mm 1.4 from a shop on Hangkow Road... tried all the 2nd hand shops on Kimberey Road, all the shops on Stanley Street and quite a few other TST shops (including tincheungcamera.com.hk) to no avail. They are now phasing this lens out (in favour of the larger profit generating 55/1.4) so they are becoming hard to find.Great lens with fantastic bokeh.
Happy hunting.

I finally got my Nikon 18mm-200mm from Sham Shui Po. There are quite a few shops on the perimeter of the golden computer mall that are dedicated to selling/buying lenses - new and second hand. Would recommend them.
