My child will travel with helper, any document to cross a border?
Posted by olga (45 days ago)
My child is 6 yeas old. He is going to travel with our helper and my friends to Tailand. Do I need to pass them any document to cross a border that I (or I and husband) agree my son to travel without parents?

You should give your friends a letter authorizing this. Absolutely.

i would also have that letter notarised, just to be safe.

You should prepare one just in case. There is a better than even chance that no border agents would bother to ask, but if they do, it will cause your helper and friends some unwelcome delay, and possibly miss their flights.
Your letter should follow the typical HK authorization format:
"I, <name>, holder of <passport or ID number>, parent of <child's name>, holder of <ID number>, hereby authorize <helper's name>, holder of <ID number> to take my child <name> to travel in <list of countries to visit> from the period of <dates>. For questions or clarifications, please contact me at <contact info, address and phone number>"

You should also contact your airline, and ask them for their policy.

Thank you all for reply.
Today checked with immigration department and they said no any authorization letter require. But we will defenatly write a letters from each of us for in case. One of my friend told me she did a letter from husband and to notarise it cost her HKD 2000. It is too much.

Immigration's answer would be only in respect of HK. They cannot speak on behalf of other countries. If you do the responsible thing as a parent (and as an employer/friend to those into whose care you are entrusting your 6yo child) then you will definitely provide some sort of letter along the lines of the format suggested earlier. And if I was your friend I would not consider taking your child without such a letter.

if you contact your embassy, they may offer notarisation. the canadian embassy does it and it costs me $300.
even when i travel MYSELF with MY children, if my husband does not come too, i get the letter. canadian immigration has asked to see it in the past. THEY were also the ones to strongly suggest i have it notarised.
you may think $2000 is too much, but what will it cost if your friends/helper & child are not allowed into the country they are travelling to?
