Moving to Hong kong
Posted by Onerahi27 (162 days ago)
Looks like I could be moving to Hong kong in the new year for a new position for my work. nothing is finalised but am getting a bit nervous as I dont know anyone. I am 34, and currently living in London. Is there still a very sociable expat community in HK? I have heard that many years ago when it was a British colony it was amasing. I have never been, so just want to find out more.

Not to worry, there is a huge and very social expat community. Of the places abroad I have lived, HK beats the others hands down when it comes to meeting my "people", i.e. expats.
You will meet people at work, out on the town, doing sports, volunteering. There is as much to do as you want.

there are people from virtually every country, your experience here could be amazing. you just have to open yourself up to meeting ALL kinds/nationalities. not just those who are from where you come from, otherwise, what's the point?
i have friends, whom i have met here, from:
sweden
lithuania
russia
philippines
australia
nz
canada
usa
france
japan
korea
china
hk
brazil
south africa
ireland
uk
just to name a few...

Moving abroad is always an adjustment. If you can deal with that, you'll be fine. In any case HK is quite an easy place to adapt to as an expat.

had a french english colleague years ago, whined and whined to no end how everything in hk does not compare to England... even down to the size of envelopes!
something would be bound to be different to what you are accustomed to but if you keep an open mind, everything would be easy peasy.

I bet your colleague complained when he was in England as well. ;)
