Disposal of non-rechargable batteries

So far, all the recycling drop-off bins I have seen accept rechargable batteries only. Does anyone have any advice on the environmentally favourable disposal of my growing bag of not rechargable spent chemical batteries? Or must I begin building a concrete sarcophagous for them.

This is a question I've been asking for a long time and no one seems to know. The answer I've been getting is a guilt-laden "Uh, I just throw them in the garbage." I have a bag that I've been accumulating and I'm getting tempted to just throw them in the garbage because I'm afraid that one of my kids will find them and start licking them. But I really don't want to so please, if anyone out there knows, would greatly appreciate some information. Thanks!

according to this govt website, recycling of disposable batteries is neither as environmentally nor as economically beneficial as recycling rechageables...their words not mine...and with most new batteries containing reduced levels of mercury, our landfills are more than capable of containing them...again their words...its all here:

Thank you. So I guess there is no environmentally safe place to dispose our used batteries. I went on the site before and there is no information about disposable batteries. Well, I guess I have no choice. Appreciate you sharing that information.
