Best way to heat house during winter?

We live in an old village house the has a slate roof upstairs with an open staircase. It's going to be hard to keep warm due to lack of insulation. What would be a good cheap way to stay warm?

- Curtains.
- Thick rugs.
- Barring underfloor heating (absolutely best way to heat a house), I would go with electrical oil-filled radiators. You can find them at Fortress and so forth. They'll start stocking them any time now.

if you can isolate the upstairs by using curtains and such and confine the heating to one floor, life will be more comfy. Sleep in the cold upstairs, use down filled sleep bags and save money big-time. This a first hand report from upstate new york.

Agreed with jobin. Sleeping in a cool room beats sleeping a warm room any day.
