ADHD homeschooling 11yr old Kiwi in Ma On Shan

Posted by Ani deSouza (1585 days ago)
Dear All,
I am about to begin home schooling my verbally bright, kind hearted, creative but 'classic' ADHD son.He is keen on computers and making video films, guitar and drumming and is quite imaginative.I have some major health problems and need to help him make contact with some social groups. He gets into bother with large structured groups but interacts well in one to one situations. He also has ligament problems so can't do contact sports.I had intended enriching his time myself but am now in for a 'long haul' health wise. I can see him becoming isolated. He is school phobic, but I have seen him interact with other creative ADHD kids overseas really well.Where are the ADHD kids in HK? I asked at his last school to meet other families but the idea of grouping these kids was not met with enthusiam.
Is there any homeschooling group operating in Sai Kung Ma On Shan area? Anyone keen to share ideas?

not quite what you're after, but i work with ADHD kids on outdoor camps in the Sai Kung area.
the camps are run by a company called Premier Sports, based out of Sai Kung, www.premiersport.biz.
they have a doctor who has ADHD herself and organise week long camps or day trips depending.
contact them and maybe they can give some information on local groups.

Article about it was in the SCMP a few weeks ago, just before the school holidays. It was a whole page article.
Try contacting the Jockey Club Sarah Roe School - secondary students with significant learning problems - it shares the campus with King George V.
Try contacting an autism support group (or similar) - they may have a contact list for other support groups.
Try contacting a kiwi/aus/uk/usa ADHD support group and ask them for international contacts (at a management level they frequently share information)
Have you asked Samaritans?
Has he tried motorcross(dirt bikes)? It is a 'bloke' sport, can lead to an interest in engines which some ADHD find as fascinating as XBox. It is up at Fanling.
I have sent you a personal message (if I can sort it out)
cheers and good luck

If you would like a play friend for you son. My 9 year old (nearly 10) also has ADHD and Aspergers and yes it is difficult to find any groups for such children. We live in Sai kung,so no to far from Ma Oshan.

Hi- I've talked to my son-he is nervously interested-for all the usual reasons. He is wondering about them chatting through e-mail to see how they get on.What do you think? My son is nearly 12.Alternatively maybe the "parents" could meet in Sai Kung for coffee?

A bit off topic - but have you looked at omega-3 and grape seed extract to help Jora with the ADHD?
I have 3 ADHD kids (14, 12, 10) - their behaviour is controlled through diet (for about 5 years) and dietary supplements and has made a significant impact on all our lives. Might want to look at it if you haven't already.

Thanks for your help,
We have done the diet route and it worked pretty well have until secondary school and it then became unworkable on its own.The schools expectations were beyond the limits of his character-and the special needs help was insulting. It would have been funny if it wasn't real...

yes..is there a way I can send it without making it public?

Hi!
Go to the control panel just beneath your user name. Once there, you should be able to check the email I sent you & also reply back to me or anybody else for that matter. Hope that's of help! :)

Thre is a group in HK known as FOCUS ON CHILDREN'S UNDERSTANDING tel. 2849-8218 which provides a support group to parents with children that have learning disabilities plus they could probably give you a list of local resources.
Hope this helps. The Community Advice Bureau (CAB)
