Hi,
Can someone recommend village home security companies and some indicative cost. Mine is a 1400 sq ft house in Sai Kung. Thanks

I can recommend Group 4 Securicor, 2173-3333, www.g4s.com.hk. They have an easy to use wireless system. They will come over and give you an estimate. Susan from Community Advice Bureau

"best security in sai kung is having a dog."
Maybe helps against random wanderers but not against a targeted burglary.

A trained good guard, heck even an untrained one, is a great deterrent. Dogs are territorial and even the sweetest dogs can get aggressive with an intruder.
I suppose you can neutralize a dog, but by the same token you can neutralize an alarm system. The point is that unless you have something particular that the burglars want, why would they bother with the dog and/or alarmed houses when there are other ones that are softer targets.

" i really want to see what the burglar is doing when he approach my rottweiler."
No, you don't want to see him poisoning your rottweiler or eliminating it in some other ways he has learned for example in PLA. Has happened in HK several times.

So what are your suggestions for securing a home against PLA-trained commandos, Island-Hopper?

dansande: the solution is already mentioned in this thread: contact professional security company.
In addition, one should also stop living in a dream world and learn about the environment he/she is living in. Lots of hill dwelling II's of new territories are former PLA who were left jobless after reductions in military personnel.
Maybe not modern, up-to-date commandos but a kind of hands-on guys grown up on country side.

I agree, it is not a daily occurence to have intruders in our homes here in Sai Kung/Clearwater Bay, and with sensible precautions that you'd practise wherever you live there's really no need to worry. Not happened to me yet, in 11 years, and I don't even have a dog. But our neighbour (whose home provides more access from a mountain behind us and I guess looks richer and therefore more appealing to unwelcome visitors) has had several burglaries in the past seven years. Generally, it is opportunistic thieves grabbing what they can, but on two horrible occasions one of his dogs was stabbed to death and another time one was poisoned. We are on a main road, not out in the countryside, by the way.
The police can give basic common-sense tips on home security.

cara: that's the most common error in security matters "nothing ever happened to me, so it's completely safe"
Thames' post is very good - as I also mentioned, some measures are good against random wanderers but it's a completely different issue, if there is something in the house that really attracts burglars.

Is there something in the OP's house that particularly attracts professional burglars? By the way, it's highly debateable whether security 'professionals' will offer enough protection against the home invader type of intruder; the Swiss businessman who was held hostage in his home on the Peak in November lived in an estate with lots of security in place.

Well, no one is 100 % safe but there are professionals and "professionals".

Bruce, you don't have to believe... Your advice is just so unrelated to the question that I can't see any relevance to this thread
OP wanted to know cost of a security company, so obviously he/she is for some reason concerned about security.
The best way of course would be to let someone qualified to assess OP's unique situation an then see what are the reasonable security measures and only then you would know the cost.
