Fix the toilet

A local plumber charges around $200 - $300 service fee per job, plus cost of materials. It sounds like yours is a fairly easy job so it shouldn't be much more than a few hundred dollars. If you're not Chinese, it might be worth your while to ask a Chinese friend or colleague to talk to the plumber otherwise you might get a different rate. Our toilet was leaking last year, and my husband was quoted $2000 to get it fixed. I got our building security guard to talk them on the phone and it was $250 plus costs. The whole job came to less than $400.

The perks and perils of living in Hong Kong:
the salary tax might be 15% but
the plumber charge 8000 HKD for two hours light work (insulation around an existing bathtub).
We live in Sheung Wan and he was brought in by the building management; his name is mr Lam and we hope to never see him again!
