Where to buy affordable art in HK?

Hi there,

Is there anywhere in Hong Kong selling reasonably priced (i.e. sub-HK$15k or max HK$30k), exciting contemporary, original art?


I can't seem to find a HK equivalent of britart/eyestorm (if you know those websites) - but that's the sort if thing I'm after.

Any help greatly appreciated - surely there is SOMETHING out there!

I'm sure someone will recommend a rather more salubrious gallery, but if you're stuck there's a fantastic little shop in Sai Kung if you're out this way ever. Okay, so it sells variations of the beautiful but oh-so ubiquitous Buddha face, which it seems all expats must have displayed on at least one wall, but there are also great one-offs and, if you have something in mind, they're happy to do it. You'd be paying way less than $15k.

You won't find much exciting original contemprary art in HK. It's all garbage designed to get clueless idiots to part with their money. An artist finds a "style" thqat sells and then just replicates it endlessly. This describes anything in any gallery in Central. Why don't you consider buying nice prints of famous works, or even replicas of famous sculptures? MOMA in NYC and Singapore has this stuff.


Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of seriously cutting edge stuff being made in China, but it won't see the light of day in HK, or even in many Chinese galleries. Alot of it is ephemeral art that the art market won't look at.


My one suggestion is that you could consider contacting the arts departments of the universities to see what the students are producing. You could go to their finals exhibitions and possibly pick up something interesting and truly contemporary. You'd have a pretty interesting cultural experience as well and you'd also be appreciated for being a bit out there. Go for it!

There IS a creative local art scene!

The Fringe Club has regular exhibits of local and regional artists.

Also, One Space has affordable HK art.

Check out the Cattle Depot, which is an arts village in Hong Kong (it's in a converted pre-WW2 slaugherhouse)

The HK Art Museum has information on local artists on their website.

I just recently moved to here and would like to find some art pieces for my empty flat. Have checked out some galleries on Hollywood road but most of the interesting artworks are beyond my budget. Where can I find original quality art with affordable price, say HK$10k-50k?

Ive looked all over HK for some abstract paintings, the best by far, based off of selection and price is DSL Furniture.


You can pick up a new painting cheaper than some of the second hand paintings seen on the classified.

Ive a couple in my home, they're definitely worth checking out. I'll note there contact info below.
