Health Insurance Suggestions?
Posted by h_vernier (885 days ago)
My husband and I are from the US, and we're thinking about moving and working in Shanghai, and we are researching health insurance in Shanghai. What is a good health insurance company in China? Has anyone heard of Global Health Insurance.

Hi h vernier
There are a few companies that call their plans Global Health. Although if you are living in China I would go for an international insurance plan. These plans provide you with full refunds for hospital and doctors visits, and provide medical evacuation / repatriation cover. These plans will cover you worldwide, so if you travel you would still be fully covered.

Bupa International covers worldwide health insurance. Call their HK office for details. You will submit your claims either directly to their HK office or to their UK head office. They are not cheap though.

BUPA International, depending on the cover required, could cost a 30 year old about USD2,800 for a full refund policy. Other companies can be competitive depending on the cover required.

Take a look at a company called Journeyman Services Ltd who offer a policy which may be suitable. A search on Google will find them and they can supply a quote on return.

I found an insurance broker, called Kwiksure. Their website is: http://www.kwiksure.com
When I asked them for health insurance, they prepared an excel table with all the major providers to compare. BUPA does good marketing, but in comparison not much value for money. Hope that helps

i agree with helislon that BUPA have so many restrictions and limits that i wouldnt recommend at all ,so i just use the govt service in HK and buy seperate medical evacuation coverage for the mainland so i can be brought back to hk in event of serious accident illness ASAP

Hi, also look into Prudential. Separate medical covereage can be bought in HK to cover you in China. But, as I think you will know you have to buy the coverage in HK under Chinese Law. If you need any further assistance, you can email me or call me on 2313 3601.

An insurance company in China may not necessarily be what you need.
What you may need is an international insurer that offers comprehensive cover, the guarantee of renewal (don't be fooled on this.. ask to see the policy wording where it says that renewal is guaranteed and not just something at the insurers discretion) and in your case, the option to seek treatment in the US or even return to live in the US.
BUPA/IHI's International Swiss Medical is probably the most comprehensive plan available in this category, but it does not come cheap and may, in the not too distant future, be withdrawn from sale by BUPA which has brought out what many would figure to be a less than satisfactory alternative, called 'World Wide Options'. (perhaps no good for you as Americans can't keep cover in the US, as far as I am aware).
An interesting alternative for you in China is the Nordic platinum or Gold plans which cost a good bit less than BUPA/IHI's, even if you allow for some loading in order to be able to choose to return to the US for treatment. Catch here is that once your condition was stabilized Nordic would insist you to left the US.
In China, Nordic uses a very professional SOS/Evacuation company called 'EURO-CENTER' www.eurocenter.com, as their claims handler.
The Euro Center pays small claims in RMB and handles hospital admissions as well as provides a support to a network of clinics in Beijing, Shanghai, Guanzhou etc.
For info on Bupa brokers call IHI/BUPA on 2517 5511 and for Nordic Brokers, call Northern Lights Health Care (Nordic's administrator) on 28 517 517
