Orange juice addiction
Posted by Marie3 (252 days ago)
I think I may have an addiction to orange juice. I have to have it everyday. I drink an average of 2 glasses of orange juice a day. I drink Tropicana orange juice (with calcium). Is this bad? Sometimes I take up to 4 glasses a day. Can anyone share their experience with me and if anyone knows how to overcome this?

It's not harmful to drink in small quantities, but 4 glasses a day is probably overdoing it a bit. It would help if you could dilute it. Do a quick Google and you'll read all you need to know about orange juice, including the fact that it contains sugars and acids that could ruin your teeth. Not to mention the calories, which will make you put on weight (same amount as in a glass of beer). Although it contains vitamin C and (added) calcium but you'd be better off if you could limit yourself to a small glassful and drink plain water and eat whole orange(s) instead.

Thank you very much Thames. I have this week started eating a whole orange - its just that when orange are not in season I get really desperate. I will moving forward dilute the orange juice as you suggested.

Is it the sugar in the juice that you're craving or the flavour?
Sounds like a sugar addiction. (Common, the constant sugar highs drop off rapidly, leaving you craving more sugar)
Have you tried willpower? Not having juice when you want it? If you break the cycle you may find the sugar cravings disappear.

I don't think 2 glasses of OJ (freshly squeezed or processed) is that bad for you. Maybe try and drink it in the morning when you wake up since your muscles are depleted anyway of glycogen.
If you are worried about taking in too much sugar, cut down on it later in the day e.g. try drinking your coffee without sugar, cut down on processed carbs like white bread, pasta, or even white rice.
If you exercise frequently, then you shouldn't be worried at all!

You will put on weight even if it's squeezed from fresh oranges. This is because the sugar in the juice will quickly enter your bloodstream. This will cause your blood-sugar levels to spike and the excess sugar will then be removed by insulin and stored as fat. This is why diabetics have problems with fruit juice. It's even worse if it's processed orange juice with extra sugar (Tropicana is exceptionally sweet). However if you eat an orange, the sugar will be released slowly into your bloodstream and you will not put on weight. This is because the blood sugar level will not spike, insulin will not be produced to remove the excess sugar and store it as fat. It's basically the same effect as with aspirin. Dissolved aspirin works quicker than a swallowed aspirin as it hits your bloodstream quicker. You're better off with a doughnut - honestly.

Well, I'm a type two - and my spouse reckons that the "Mr Juicy" stuff I drink is too sweet and dodgy for my longevity.
However, they did bring out a shortlived "Pink Grapefruit" juice which I grabbed - but still rather sweet - and now that "Let's Rip 'em off" organisation - that changed the 2.23 Litre bottles to 2 Litre with no compensatory reduction in co$t - has seemed to have abandoned the sale of "Pink Grapefruit" juice!!

I usually have a large number of periods per year and the drinking of orange juice has greatly reduced that number since i have begun drinking it. - This was an addition from the previous post, i thought you would like to know :)
