After 5 Sports Bar. Lots of expats go there. Great atmosphere. It's behind the jockey club betting shop.

Try to go to Kwong Fuk Road near Tai Po Jockey Club and opposite there is a bar where so many foreigners frequentlyan go there during wednesday and Friday. but there is one a frequent british guy who always go there with his wife. The name of the BAR is 133 lounge. You can try one at the back of the jockey club there are some bars there too. But i would say 133 is a safe place to go.

Used to work in Tai Po 10 years ago and used to go into the bar mentioned above behind the Jockey Club. Fantastic bunch of people in there and you'll hear stories that you'll be reciting for years.
Good luck

avoid going to bars in tai po? how come? rough crowd?
I just need a place to grab a beer, chill and hang out with friends after a long day at work. i think i'll give the bar by the jockey club a try this weekend. Sounds like a good place.

I can understand why jushayward says avoid the bars in Tai Po because some local places can get quite rough. Alot of bars in TP are infested with local triads and trouble can be come by quite easilly. All you have to do is look at someone in the wrong way and the s**t hits the fan. Go to places where there are expats like the after 5 just to play it safe!

Really? It's more likely to happen in Glasgow? You may just find the tatood natives in Glasgow are just regular common folks who do regular jobs and just want to relax with a beer and won't turn on you because you look at them. Just like anywhere else.
How come you felt strongly enough to send in a reply about a sinister cliche happening in Tai Po and yet come out with another about Glasgow.
I despair.

Slippery Nick, sweetie, I lived and worked in Glasgow for more than 20 years and never witnessed any violence however have been mugged in London when visiting. And, since we're comparing notes, I am the only westerner in my place of work for the past 4 years here in Hong Kong and socialise with locals too so yes 'some of my best friends are Chinese'
Is there a major city in the UK that doesnt have its rough areas? Why as an
Englishman, do you feel an authority on aspects of a culture that you have limited experience of? A drunken convesation over a few pints in a pub with Scottish people hardly qualifies you as an expert.
One more thing. Try conditioning of several hundred years by the English insularity in Scotland. For the record, I'd buy you a pint anytime. xxx

I'd say After 5's the nicest bar I've been to in Tai Po.
About traids... a traid boss goes to After 5 too. He plays pool and drinks Wine (Rose), if anyone's interested in knowing what an actual triad looks like in HK. They're really not mythical creatures and are really not as scary as some people think. He's a cool guy (in his late thirties I think), is friendly, and just likes to hand out at the bar and sometimes talk business.
So... yeah. After 5's nice, even WITH triads around :)

Fascinating posts! If I were still a scribe I'd be buying you all a pint, or your libation of choice, just to flesh out the stories! Seems I'll have to drop by some bars in Tai Po next time I'm in that neighbourhood!

Railway Pub's still in operation, but overtaken by younguns... You might meet Frank and Peter (with Polly!) there imbibing occasionally, though Frank's more likely to be found in Speakeasy these days, relatively new bar a few blocks away...

Funny you should mention Frank... him and a bunch of the old Railway regulars frequent the After5 Sports Bar in Taipo, earlier in the evening though, on most Friday evenings - along with a large bunch of expat teachers from ???
If the OP is after a drink or meeting people in Taipo, the After5 Sports Bar on a Friday night is probably the best place to start with.... and then the world is your oyster....
Soho, Shalimar (old Mike Elvies 688 bar), Karoake , Butterfly, Bobby London, 133, Tropicana Lounge, 6V, Bar King, Tung Fat Square, Hippo, Gilli Gulu, After5 Wine Bar, Star Bar, Harp Bar, Forget me Not... to name but a few, are all within relative staggering distance....

Interesting read, I was passing through tai po today and had a look around. I had a gunners at the after 5 sports bar, staff where friendly, they had bitters, unfortunatly i had the car, feels like a great place for an afternoon swill. Hey loks (or anybody else) Is there a singles scene down there or at any of the bars mentioned above? I just split with my chinease girlfriend, you know how it is? Please advise

Solace4, sorry to tell you that Taipo bars in general are not really pick up joints. However some days the scenery can be quite attractive...
Most of the bars I mentioned above are local, dark and dingy type places and more suited to late night drinking and hand games (read noisy...)
If you not familiar with these type of bars, I would recommend you stick to the more western orientated After5 bars, Soho, Bobby London and 133...

Both after 5 & 133 lounge are nice place for a beer to relax after one day's tough work. Especially after 5, there are quite a number of Xpats. But, also heard "10 Degrees" is also a nice bar to visit, it is near the 2nd After 5 of Ting Kok Road area.
