I am looking into piano lessons for my 6 year old son, a beginner. What are the usual charges for private lessons (in NT)?

And how much will it cost to get a piano?

Lessons in HK for piano can range from $ 50 (half an hour), to $ XXX (sky's the limit). It depends on the qualifications of the teacher, the experience of the teacher, and the area of the teacher, and the studio/home of the teacher...etc.

It's like lunch in HK, it can range widely ... $ 10 a bowl of noodle, to $ 1000 a 8 course lunch...etc at top notch hotel.

Anyways, you get the point.

I am a private piano teacher.... that's why I say this. I see HUGE range of prices. No matter what, each piano teacher have their own "target market".

Piano- cost ranges widely too. From China made brands, to Yamahas, to Steinways to Bosendorfers or Seiler, or Fazioli (The european brands).

Have a look in Tom Lee.... get a Yamaha U1. That would be a good investment Some parents who want better long term investments would go for a U3.

My students who DO NOT know whether the child is really intersted in piano... don't want to invest in a piano yet.... have two options:

1) Buy a digital piano keyboard (under $ 10 000)

2) Rents the piano rooms by the half hour ($ 30-40 half hour).... you buy a card, lot of 10 hours .... or 5 hours. Each time you use up half an hour, they deduct from your card. No need to buy a piano until you are sure.

Hope this helps.

I think it really depends upon what you want for your child. I was trained in classical piano from 8-yrs-old with a very strict teacher. For my daughter, I want her to develop perserverance, critical thinking skills and patience through piano. The expectation is high and she has gained a lot from it (it's been 7-months now). I practice with her everyday before work for 30 minutes - 1 hour, depending on her needs that day. If you want your child to take the Royal Board exams, then you might pay more for a teacher who can meet those standards. The cost for her teacher (PhD in music) is $400 per 45 minutes.

Checked out the U1 today at Tom Lee, it's going at abour $ 41 000.00, there's a lower model, that's under U1 but better than the "leisure pianos".... it's going at $ 28 000 ... sometimes, you can negotiate a good price with the sales manager.

namaste, what a dedicated and responsible parent you are !!! (envious).

Just wanted to comment you've got a very good deal for $ 400 for a 45 minutes lesson from a Phd. Most experienced, and with high qualifications piano teachers around HK charge over $ 900 an hour.

Katetam,

Glad to hear I am getting a good deal b/c sometimes I find myself questioning the cost. Perhaps her cost is lower b/c we go to her home (?) and she is in Shatin. Thnks for commenting on dedication and responsibility. I too learn patience sitting with my daughter practicing at 6:30 in the morning everyday!

Hi,

I would ask my beginner students to start on a non-weighted keyboard, six octaves. Casio or Yamaha will do. But that's because I specialise in starting children at the age of 4 and 5, and at that age they haven't quite developed the muscles for fine motor movement.

But also depending on the child, I might also start 6 year olds on the keyboard for a term, because there is the benefit of using the Rhythm function and they can play their favourite pop/christmas songs using the rhythm backing.

I charge $450 for 45 minutes, and students also come to my place.
