Potty training
Posted by ClaireHK (166 days ago)
Anyone got any ideas of where I can get someone to help me with potty training my son who is almost 3?
He just doesn't seem to get the idea at all and my patience is running low which isn't going to help. He sits on the potty quite happily but does a wee the minute he gets up.
Please, please any ideas.

What do you mean 'he just doesn't seem to get the idea'?
I was in the same boat although I think my son knew what I wanted him to do but he just didn't like the idea of using the potty or all the other contraptions I bought for him. I finally tried again when we were visiting my parents, bought him a new potty, offered him chocolates as rewards and he finally started using it. When we got home, he carried on using the potty and other stuff I had for him. We only used chocolate as a reward for about 2 or 3 days.

Agreed with pocoyo. Your son knows what's happening. Patience patience patience.
- You will get wee on the floor. This must be accepted.
- Just stop using diapers at home during the day. Most kids don't like weeing themselves.
- Don't ask if he needs to go potty. Tell him to tell you. He'll miss a lot in the beginning, but since he knows if he doesn't tell you he'll get all wet, eventually he'll get the idea.
- I know this may be private, so don't answer if you don't want to: Has he seen you and your husband (given your username I'll assume you are a woman) go on the potty? Kids love nothing better than doing what their parents do.
- Put up a nice paper on the wall and get some gold stars. Every time he does it right he gets a gold star. 5 gold stars= a treat. Or something. As pocoyo says this shouldn't go on forever but it can be good to get him over the hump.
- Everyone in the house needs to help out. I have seen some kids where the helper potty trains 6 days a week but the parents can't be bothered and let the kid wear a diaper on Sunday. That just prolongs the process since on Monday morning you have to start almost from scratch.

our boy has always watched us go. he got a big rush out of saying bye bye to the tissue and then flushing.
we never pushed the issue and he was day-trained by about 2 years. he still has the occasional accident (like 2X in the past 8 months). we live a long way from hk island and i used to put him in nappies when we'd go out. much easier if you are stuck in traffic. for the past 3 months, i always make him pee before we go out and then once we get to where we are going. he's really good at letting us know now.
we are still working on the night-time. i'm not in any rush... he and i did one night and it was great...i got him up every 2 hours. didn't wet the bed... the next night, he peed before 9:30...it had only been 1.5 hours and he'd peed right before bed... i gave up for a while...
i've told him that if he has a dry nappy 5 days in a row, he'll get a new "tigger and pooh movie" he's very excited... haven't had a dry nappy in the morning yet....

We didn't want to rush either. Then our daughter, who had been day-trained for about 3 months, said "no diaper" when we were going to put her to bed one evening. She's been totally diaper free ever since. Nothing like self-motivation. ;)

we have not done ours yet (they are 21 months - so will wait till 2 yrs) - but all the books, and friends etc - tell you the same (pretty much as axpguys said):
- once you start training - NO NAPPIES during the day, no matter what - otherwise the kids get confused - there will be a lot of accidents - just bite the bullet for a few days.
- buy undies with his fave character - Bob the builder or something - he would not want to pee in them..
- start charts
- make sure he sees you and your husband going to the toilet - works a treat I am constantly being told
As for the night - they just have to grow into it - nothing much you can do about it - sometimes I hear kids go on sleeping in nappies till 5 yrs old and even longer - but that is not a big deal as far i am concerned - no way I am getting them (and me!!) up at night - they will just grow out of it themselves.

Thank you ldsllvn.
I am trying all those things which is why I am getting rather despondant, maybe he's just taking his time.

hi everyone. I'm currently potty training my 2.5 yr old daugther so we're basically just staying at home. can you give me some advice for when we are going out because right now I'm just making her go to potty every 20-30 mins.

Hi Sam's Mom,
You can get a portable potty that's easily folded down and can be put in your bag --from either Mothercare or Bumps to Babes. They come with (replaceable) plastic bags, so very easy and very convenient, esp. if you have a girl. With our boy, we would always go out with a stash of milk storage bags (or Ziploc or any other small plastic bags). Good luck.

Hello,
My son is almost 3y also.
Today, he can wait for toilets for the wee. But never asked for. Anyway, he can wait 3-4 hours (nap time) without any accident.
I would like him to ask for the toilets, but it's not the most important thing.
The biggest problem is the poo. I ams sure he is able to wait. But no he doesn't want to do it on the potty or the toilets. Everything is done in his pant, so I wash and wash his pants.
He never wear any diappers during the day, except special case. And when he has a diapper he is happy.
I have tried to buy cheap diappers, not confortable at all, but it changed nothing.
Do you have any advise, please?
