Nose allergy
Posted by happychick (102 days ago)
My 2yr old son has developed a nose allergy (according to his ped). He constantly has a runny nose but shows no other signs of having a cold or other illnesses. Actually it doesn't really bother him, it just drives me mad running around after him all day wiping his nose and the doctors medication only works for a few hours until the flow starts again.
We've been using an air filter since he was born and I haven't used any new cleaning products that might be irritating his nose.
Does any one know of any natural remedies that can help relieve him of his runny nose?
Thank you!

So no idea what he is specifically allergic to? They can typically test this with a blood sample. That way you'll have some idea of how to prevent it.

Hi axptguy, no, the allergy just suddenly started a couple of weeks ago. I initally thought he had a cold but the doctor dismissed the idea. I did mention to his ped about a blood test for allergies but she seemed to think that it was a bit excessive and told me to see how the medication went first. Maybe I should be getting a second opinion.

I would be more inclined to go for the blood test before the medication personally. Why put the child on meds if you don't know what it's for and it could be a waste of time anyway.
Bear in mind, the humidity really kicked in a couple of weeks ago, so that could be a factor. Perhaps he has like a hayfever type allergy. Have you tried some Dimetapp to help dry up the mucus. Depending on how severe it is, it may at least give some relief.
I agree thought, it drives me crazy when my child has a runny nose. I would definately try to follow up with further tests instead of just the meds from the doctor though.

I agree with neenib. Why medicate when you don't know the allergy? I mean I understand trying to alleviate the symptoms, but you can test at the same time.

are you sure it is not a cold? I have found that mine two have runny noses constantly once A/C starts working..... Dont think it is allergy.. I am exactly the same come to think of it...

I agree that medication is not the solution, but just needed something at the time to stop the runny nose. I think the humidity might be a factor but not sure if it's the air con as he's never had problems with it before and we've had the air con on for a couple of months now as his sleeps much better in a cool room.
neenib, what is Dimetapp and is it something I can buy from B2B? I might give this a try and also make an oppintment for a blood test to see what exactly he is allergic to, if he is at all.
Thank you all so much!

"have found that mine two have runny noses constantly once A/C starts working..."
You don't get a cold from A/C... Being chilled may make you more receptive to rhinovirus, which causes the cold. But you don't get a cold from cold. This sounds like something in the A/C (probably dust) is causing allergies. Have you checked the filters lately?

hi happychick, Dimetapp is an antihistamine, it dries up congestion and runny nose. I thought you could get it here, but I realised that I usually stock up when I'm back home or buy it online. I am actually going to the pharmacy today when I'm out, so I will double check with our pharmacist if they stock it and let you know.
As ldsllvn said, it may just in fact be a cold, the weather is all over the place at the moment. If it is just a cold, then it needs to run its course. no use with meds if there is no infection. I'll get back to you on dimetapp. I know you can definately buy it online through Pharmacy Direct (aust company), which is usually what I do.

Thank you neenib, please let me know if you can find it here as it'll be quite handle to have around even if either children develop a cold. I'll also ask my sister to have a look in the UK to see if they have it there. Thanks!

hi happychick, good news. I saw they have Dimetapp at Watsons in Fesitval Walk, so I assume they will have it in other Watsons. Give it a try to see if it helps out, it certainly can't hurt.
Good Luck!

they have it here - we bought it before in Watons, mannings and even a small random pharmacy that we have in Stanley plaza - very common - not to be given till 2 yrs old tho (so I guess is ok for your little one happychick)>

as someone who has suffered from nasal allergies to dust, mould, dustmites all my life i would suggest you check out the exact cause of the allergy. avoidance is sooo much better than medication.
i'll post my allergy specialits exact contact details as soon as i can (we just moved so god knows where my stuff is), but anyway her name is Dr Helen Chan and she's on Pedder street, Central Building 16th floor.
