Where to buy shoes for toddlers ?

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by SuzieW 16 yrs ago
I need to buy some shoes for my kids, 4 and 2.5 years old and really have no idea where to go for reasonably priced and good quality/nice design shoes for them.

I've been taliking with some Mums who just like me had the grandparents bringing over shoes from France because we just don't know where to find that in HK.

There used to be a little shop in Central, now closed, and apart from the shops in Ocean terminal and Lee Gardens offering shoes for HKD600/pair (over our budget), or the little shops in the lanes/markets where the quality does not look to good, where to go ?

Thanks

DR. Kong. Reasonable and good. You can buy out of date shoes from there that sometimes cost HK100. I got a pair recently at Tung Chung outlet mall. Also Nikki, New Balance, Puma, Clark... I have not pay more than $200 dollar for my son's shoes. He owns Dr. Kong, Nikki, Addidas, Oshkosh, Buster and the China made and etc. We bought some and some are gifts. Happy Shoes-ping!

You are joking that you cannot find shoes for toddlers right? This has to be a wind up?

Sogo / Seiyu / Jusco / Sincere, all the sports shops (Royal Sporting House, Marathon, etc), several of the babies / kids shops (dunno the names, just get dragged around - but think 1/F of New Town Plaza 3 or top floor of Festival Walk), etc. Never had a problem getting well priced quality shoes here for toddlers. Now my shoes are a different story altogether.........

There are lots of places to buy kids shoes but I don't know anywhere that measures their feet properly. The Start Right in Central was the only place I know of - they weren't the trendiest but certainly the best for growing feet!

I am not looking for sportt shoes or sneakers, this is definitely easy to find, but not the best for kids' feet, I am looking for proper leather shoes, like boots etc... And I found that in the kids shops the shoes are very expensive, over HKD500.

I remember seeing some at Clarks some time ago in Windsor house, I'll check if the shop is still there after the refitting of the all shopping mall.

exactly as SuzzieW says, evildeeds! not sneakers - there are tons of those and the are really really not good for toddler feet. I have taken my 2.5 year olds to see a podiatrist just a couple of weeks ago and she said "kids should not wear crocs or sneakers until around 6 yrs old". And any kids doctor will tell you that - their feet are developing till around 6 and sneakers and croc do not support the feet in the right way.

Another point - for evildeeds again - the shoe should be properly fitted. Start right had the same style shoes in 5-6 different widths! Nobody else does that. So, no, we are not joking when we say "no good quality toddler shoes in HK"! Well known fact.

Clarks would be the only option in HK, but still not doing proper measuring - i have not seen them bofore, did not realise you could buy them here. Good luck!

Ah ah ! I'm sure we have seen the same podiatrist ! Yes I need shoes that hold tight at the eels for my daughter as she's got a slightly inward foot, and my son got really short feet but very 'thick', a nightmare to find properly fitting shoes. They had proper shoes for the summer (bought in France again), but now that is is getting a bit coller, they start to wear their sneakers again everyday, and definitely no good. Am not planning to go to France before a couple of months... definitely need to find that Clarks shop !

Idsllvn, if sneakers are not suitable for toddlers until they are 6., what should I put buying for my 2 year to wear during the summer days. Does sneakers include those shoes by PUMA, Nike etc?

SuzieW, I bought a pair of leather boots for my son at Jacadi during a sale. It will be more than HK$200 which I think it's reasonable if its good leather. But definitely worth checking out, think they are having a 30% or 40% discount now for shoes.

Good luck!

Idsllvn, can you please provide the contact details of podiatrist that you took your child to? thanks

I know that is the problem: basically according to the podiatrist the soil of the shoes must not be 'cushioned', for summertime I found some sandals from some sport shoes, but in the winter those shops only offer trainers/sneakers.

I'll check during the sales thanks.

Blimey, where were people when they were supposed to have reading class. Read again.

OK in plain English. I mentioned sports shops as one of the options. Get it? One option. I mentioned other places where you can get real shoes. OK again for ldsllvn - real shoes. Which part of that you did not read from my post is beyond me.

Now we take our daughter - AND GET HER FEET MEASURED - to New Town Plaza 3 in Shatin. One of the shops there actually sells Clarkes shoes as well as others. I take my sons there as well although as they are older it doesn't matter as much. So your well known fact is an opinion from the island side where if it ain't there it ain't nowhere. Get out and about and explore HK and you will find!

Well with 2 toddlers and 8 months pregnant, a couple of weeks away from Xmas when everyone is out there shopping, it is easier for me to go shopping in my 'neighbourhood' instead of randomly wandering around the hundreds of shopping malls in HK, hoping to find a shop that sells proper and reasonably priced kids shoes.

Hence my initial question 'Where ?' on this forum, hoping that some people can indicate specific location for me to go to. Now that I know of a place for a successful 'shoe hunting' expedition, I'll gather my strengh and patience and will take the whole family to Shatin. Any other location that I could check ?

Germaine, we saw Dr Harfoot (believe it or not that is her name!) in Matilda in Central. Both my daughters have a bit of gait (kind of inwards) which apparently is pretty normal at this age but without proper shoes can become a problem. We are going to take them to her every 6 months (as well as bring shoes that they are wearing so she can see how the shoes are wearing out)...

and for evildeeds - I have been to pretty much most of the shops you mention (aprt from the one where your kids get measured) and NONE of them have quality shoes for less than $500, which is what SuzieW is asking for - so calm down please, deep breath..

Just to follow-up:

Saturday we started in Sheung Wan at Sincere and Wing On, and could not find anything else than sport shoes, school shoes and boots (not too good for little kids) above our budget, same at Sincere.

We then went to Sogo in Tsim Sha Tsui just to find the same and ended up checking all the kids shop at Ocean Terminal, nothing !!! So expensive, and most of the time no size available... We were about to come back empty ended wehn we found a pair on sale at Kingkow.

That was a 3.30 hours expedition...

We'll try Tung Chung (mentioned several times to me) and Shatin some other days... Too many people in shopping malls now !

What about Pediped, they have a range called Flex Boys/Flex Girls for toddlers. Have been meaning to check them out. Anyone tried them?

I'm planning to buy Combi shoes. Anyone heard of this brand in Shatin, YATA department store? They claim that their shoes are especially designed for infants/toddlers?

In all of the shops in Hong Kong that say they measure, I would suggest that you ask how many width fittings they stock. Satisfy yourself that they are able to provide a proper fit, not just sell you a pair of shoes for the sake of a sale, that is the closest to the measured fit, but not the correct fit. It isn't rocket science and parents can learn from web sites like Start-rite in the UK and Stride-rite in the USA, what you should look for when buying children's shoes, in terms of room in the toe box, width at the widest part of the forefoot, whether shoes bend at the widest part of the foot, that the soles are flexible and that shoes fit at the ankle also. Shoes made out of synthetic materials should be avoided for everyday use; leather is best. Thick soft cushioning isn't necessarily an advantage and a high arch support isn't necessary for young children. Young children's feet are soft and pliable and able to mould to shape of the shoes, a potential problem if shoes are too small. Buying shoes which are too big can lead to different problems, and is false economy. It isn't the brand or how much you pay for children's shoes that is important, it's whether both shoes fit properly, so why not use the search functions on the internet and educate yourself on what to look for. Your children may thank you in years to come.

HK is not a good place to buy "proper"kids shoes. Given the focus on kids and their development educationally it never fails to surprise me how little focus is placed on the physical development part.

I have bought my 2 yr old a few pairs from this place: http://www.littlebarefeet.com. They have a shop in Central and stock 2 quality brands for under 3s. Most are under $300 a pair.

As my daughter seems to have no foot problems I also buy cheapy canvas ones from a stall in the lanes which do for the playground. They wear out before they grow out and the quality is not great but they're cute enough and for less than $60 a pair do the job fine. Hope this helps.

Little Bare Feet don't seem to do bigger than 3 yrs old though so not sure what I'll do in a years time...

what about those local HK parents? all their kids are having feet problem because there are no 'proper' kids shoes selling in HK? I really haven't noticed kids here with feet problem because of the shoes they wear here, either my officemates who are grown up. i asked them about questions from the above, they laugh :)

Before you laugh too hard, talk to some pediatricians and podiatrists. It's not so much that they have problems in childhood as they may have them in adulthood. And it's not everyone. Most people are probably fine growing up with flip-flops. But if a kid has a weak arch or some other issue the proper footwear in infancy can mitigate problems later.

In HK, e-shopping is not huge. There aren't a lot of sites for it.

Realise this thread is over a year old but for Hong Kong side I almost always go to

Lee Gardens 2 - Shoebox and a couple of other shoe shops for kids (they have nice Italian makes -watch out for reductions (very often) otherwise $$$) (Causeway Bay)

SEIBU Pacific Place,

there seems to be virtually no kids shops left in Times Square, I noticed./ Shops do measure, but they dont seem to know how to do it. I suggest do that yourself (trace round foot-print off a shoe size measurer easily available online!)

If you go to Elements mall, there is a nice childrens shoe shop above the ice-rink. I've bought several pairs there, after iceskating :)

+1 on Shoebox. They are in Lee Gardens 2 and Harbor City, but have better selection in the former.

I recommend Ecco brand. Even their sandals have proper ankle support and they easily last through 2-3 kids.

yea, it is really not easy to find some good shoes for the kids. i had tried those littlebarefeet but turned out my son slipped down in the school many times. this time i changed to buy Attipas for my little daughter. 'coz it appears so good in Parents' Journal with so many thoughtful design. my daughter loves them so much! i bought them in citistore. highly recommended!

for leather shoes, stride rite is quite expensive for something made in china. not sure if they go through the formaldehyde test... i would rather pick something much cheaper than that... any other recommendations?

You might want to try this brand out... Little Blue Lamb. I found them on this website www.lepetitsociety.com and really like the quality and style.. feels very nice too as they are made with leather. Don't think they are available in retail stores though as I couldn't find them

Just a note of caution; the trouble with buying children's shoes online is that you are stuck with them if they don't fit, and how do you determine which size your child needs. I don't think it's as simple as saying he or she is wearing a size six now so I'll buy a seven for future use. Children's feet can be damaged by putting them into ill-fitting shoes, too big or too small, and if your child doesn't like the shoes, whether they fit or not, the chances are they will never be worn.
