Advice on keeping little ones healthy this flu season

ORIGINAL POST

I have two children - 3 year old and 1 year old. For the first five months of this year, we didn't have any illness.

Now in the last 3 months, it seems one or the other or both have had a cold / flu / bug of some sort and it's driving me crazy. I know it's normal for young children to get sick and they will grow out of it but it seems we are on a constant cycle of sickness in our house.

My 3-year old goes to nursery five morning a week which is where a lot of the germs come from. They do a lot of hand washing, and they are fairly proactive at sending sick kids home. Short of pulling him out, is there anything else I can do to be or do I just accept this is the way it is!!!!???? Please any advice on keeping the bugs at bay.

They have both had the flu shot recently so I'm curious to see if that will make a difference.

Tired Mama.

I have had a similar problem with my two. They have cold like symptoms, coughing constant runny noses even ear infections. Turns out they both have allergies, the doctor prescribed a nasal spray which we use sparingly as it contains a steroid. I also bought air purifiers for each bedroom and the living room which help at home. The doctor told me that winter is especially bad for airborn allergens.

Hope you get some peace soon.

Well, in the words of Cara (a forum participant who's a staunch believer in vaccinations) ....... "everybody knows vitamin c cures everything". So why haven't you tried mega-dosages of vitamin c?

I see that you've only been a member of this forum since April 2011. That being the case, you may have missed this previously posted 60 minutes documentary which showcases the incredible ability of vitamin c to heal ....

http://www.3news.co.nz/Living-Proof/tabid/371/articleID/171328/Default.aspx

There's no doubt mega-dosage of vitamin c will make short work of the minor health issues you face with your little ones.

Also, if you type the word "vaccine" in the search engine on this page it'll pull up a list of discussions that have occurred on this forum about that subject. If you read thru the listings, I think you'll conclude that vaccinating your children for any reason undermines their health and places them at risk for more serious issues.

With vitamin c in your medicine cabinet you needn't be concerned about any virus, bacteria, poison, or disease. However .... you should be afraid -- VERY AFRAID -- of those vaccinations.

Let us know how things turn out.

Best wishes.

I guess you must've missed reading this part of mamainhk message ....

"They have both had the flu shot recently so I'm curious to see if that will make a difference."

You do consider flu shots as vaccinations, yes?

" .... the flu shot will ONLY protect against the FLU (if it is the correct flu strain) ...."

Will you provide some studies that support this claim of yours? I'd be very interested in seeing them because the studies referenced on this link http://www.naturalnews.com/flu_vaccine.html say the flu shot is essentially useless in protecting against the flu.

There is also the matter of side effects and long term injury caused by flu shots. You can also read about that on the above link.

In summary ......... my advice on getting the little ones healthy and keeping them healthy are ....

1) use mega-dosages of vitamin c to get them well

2) use mega-dosages of vitamin c daily to keep them well

3) be afraid, VERY AFRAID, of all vaccinations

Best wishes

mamainhk, I had the same problems with mine.

My eldest daughter started kindie and she got sick almost every month. As soon as she recovered from one, she'd get another. I was taking her to the doctor's every month. I was so worried about her being on meds constantly and the dr kept reassuring me that whatever meds he gave her were in very minimal quantity to cause any harm. However after 1 year of giving meds to her, I decided that I was not comfortable with it and just gave her natural remedies plus keeping her healthy by eating healthy food, sleep early and lots of exercise. I think it wasn't until she was 6 when she was finally not getting sick so often. Now it's only about once or twice a year? I do take 1000mg of Vitamin C when I feel I'm coming down with a cold. It works most of the time, not all the time ;-)

"I do take 1000mg of Vitamin C when I feel I'm coming down with a cold. It works most of the time, not all the time"

The reason the vitamin C did not work is because of the ridiculously small amount of it you took. The next time you feel a cold coming on try taking 1000mg .... EVERY 20 MINUTES! Guaranteed to work.

A general therapeutic level of vitamin c daily supplementation can be found here .....

The three (3) key words to remember for a successful vitamin c therapy are:

Amount

Frequency

Duration

The other vitamin to consider is vitamin D. If you are low in vitamin D your immune system is unable to function properly, so you will be unable to fight off colds and flu.Hong Kongers are particulary prone to low levels of vitamin D due to a number of reasons; little time outdoors, sunscreen use, air pollution and sun avoidance being but a few. Boosting your vitamin D levels with sensible sunscreen-free sun exposure and/or vitamin D supplements will benefit a persons/childs health on all levels. Taking a good multivitamin and mineral along with the vitamin D3 will aid absorption. Up to 1 year a child can take up to 1000iu's of vitamin D, after one take 1000iu's for every 25 pounds of body weight. This will also help protect your child from many illnesses such as heart disease, rickets, arthritis, MS, diabetes, ADHD and cancer.

Thanks for all your comments. Very interesting reading.

Cara and exyogi obviously have some history on the topic of vaccine issue. Not wishing to add any fuel to a clearly hot topic.... but you might both be interested to hear that the Australian government recently introduced a law which means if you don't have if kids vaccinations records aren't up to date, you will lose family tax benefits:

Families will need to have their children fully immunised to receive the existing $726 per child Family Tax Benefit Part A supplement, replacing the Maternity Immunisation Allowance from 1 July 2012.

Christeve, very interesting.

My sis in Canada gave Vitamin D drops to her babies when they were in their first year.

She bought me a bottle to use when I had my first child. After the first month, I thought about it and stopped giving it to her. My reason was that we had plenty of sunlight here in Hong Kong, unlike Canada so my daughter was getting plenty of Vitamin D already.

Cara, the Vitamin D Council (website above in exyogi's post) is an excellent collator of vitamin D research. If you google vitamin D and whichever of those illnesses you are interested in, you will come up with countless papers.Drs Garland and Dr Horlick also will give you further information. Vitamin D research has come a long way in the last 10 years.

GemmaW, Sunlight is the best form of vitamin D without doubt. Unfortunately a number of issues stop us from gaining maximum benefit from it. UVB which is the part of sunlight that produces vitamin D in your body can only do that, as logic dictates, if it falls on you skin. The main factors that influence the earth surface magnitude of UVB, are geographic latitude, season, time of day i.e. peak UV period 10:00–15:00 am, and the levels of atmospheric pollution. Add to that sunscreen use. Even weak sunscreens (SPF=8) block your body's ability to generate vitamin D by 95%. You can see that those factors combine to mean that few people are getting enough vitamin D from the sun. It is clear now that the advice about sun exposure given over the last 30 years is damaging our health.
